Jake was introduced to his new family last week & continues to blossom in their home.

We love Jake with all our hearts. I actually cannot believe that we are going to follow through and let him go. It is going to be a really sad day for us. He is so great and I am sure he is going to make his new family fall in love with him. Where as our Bear is all about making sure we are happy and pleased with him. Jake is tenderhearted and sweet and cuddly. I will miss his hugs. I am hoping it will be harder on us than him. And I pray it is true that dogs just live in the moment and he will move on. I would hate for him to think we do not want him. We have got to find him a good family!!!!!!

My name is Jake and I am a 4 year old Chocolate Lab. I get along with kids and other dogs. There is a guinea pig living here and I would love to get my teeth on him. I was recently all stressed out after being dropped off at a shelter. Thankfully a foster family took me in. Everyone is so impressed with me. I am pretty mellow for a 4 year old. I am also very independent. I don’t need much attention. I do like sleeping on the furniture though. My family got me a bed, but when they are not looking, I usually get up on the couch. I am pretty quiet all day and can be trusted to watch the house if you are out. In the evening I like to get out my toys and love it when someone plays with me. I am also pretty trustworthy around food. My family had a party with 40 people and lots of food and I did not touch anything. I did clean up the floor if anyone dared to drop anything though. I am a little picky about my water bowl. I like fresh cold water. You will know that my water is not fresh enough when you catch me drinking out of the toilet.  My family also laughs because when they open the door I won’t go out unless I have to go to the bathroom. Especially when it is cold or raining. When I do go out, I will bark at the door when I am ready to come back in. I will stay out if you want to play ball though. I like to play fetch and will bring the ball right back to you.  The one thing that scares me is the vacuum. I usually just run and hide until you are done. Now that my foster family can tell you all about me, I am ready to find my furever home. I can’t wait to meet you.

Last night while we were watching TV, Jake went over to the back door and rang the bells hanging from the door knob.  I took him outside and sure enough, he had to go.  That might have been a total fluke.  It will be interesting to see if it happens again.  Jake wanted nothing to do with the gated laundry room last night.  Since he was barking non-stop, I leashed him and attached the leash to the bottom of the bedpost with a dog bed for him to lie on.  He was quiet as a mouse all night and barely moved from his spot.

Jake is much more comfortable today and his personality is starting to show.  Yesterday I thought he didn’t understand any commands.  Today I can see that was just stress related.  When I grab his leash to go for a walk, he sits to have it attached without being asked.  He also will sit for a treat.  However, he pushes his way through the doorway to get outside, so we started on the wait command today.

Jake was sticking so closely to me, I decided to give him some off leash time in the yard today, keeping him well away from the fence line.  He did really well.  He keeps his eyes on me and doesn’t stray far from my side.  When I whistle for him, he comes running.  Since he’s only 7 days post-surgery, I didn’t want him to get too much exercise.  However, I let him play with Gracie for a few minutes today to stretch his legs and burn off some energy.  They did really well running after each other and the tennis balls.  He knows how to retrieve and bring the ball back.  He’s obviously enjoying the freedom that a fenced yard provides.

In the house, he chills out very easily and his preferred place seems to be under my desk while I’m working or somewhere nearby.  He seems to be equally comfortable with men or women.

Today Jake was picked up from the Humane Society of Berks County.  Jake is pretty stressed right now. The shelter said in the last week he started coming out of his shell.  However, I think moving him today took away his newly acquired comfort zone.  I think he will settle in and become more comfortable within a few days.  He’s a handsome boy and seems very sweet.

Jake did a play bow with me in the yard when I was introducing him to our property.  Gracie has since done repeated play bows but Jake hasn’t responded.  Gracie has a very direct approach, but Jake has responded appropriately by just turning his head away.  Once I feel he is more comfortable here, I’ll put Jake on a long lead to give him some room to play with Gracie.

Jake was neutered on 11/17 and is a run away locomotive on a leash and is incredibly strong.  However, he’s obviously had some leash training as he does respond appropriately if I stop or turn around.  He may just need a refresher course.
