Queenie #2 Black Labrador Retriever Female 7 Years Old ID#3443

Black Labrador RetrieverMeet Queenie! Queenie is a 7yo purebred English style Labrador who was a breeder Mama.  She was surrendered due to the breeder having too many dogs.  Please read her blog from the bottom up to learn more about this pretty girl while in foster care.

Miss Queenie has been working hard lately. She has shown us that she ‘can’ do steps. Although, she is still reluctant in certain circumstances. She will likely do best in a home that either has minimal steps and/or doesn’t need her to climb a full flight to enjoy her life, at least not right away. Over time, we feel she’ll go up and down without issue, but she’ll need some continued training/practice. She has also been sleeping on the bedroom floor on a nice fleece blanket rather than in her crate. She settles quickly and sleeps all night, albeit with a few adorable snores. She still enjoys her crate and will go in and rest throughout the day with the door open.black labrador retriever Now that Queenie is done with her medicine and seems to have kicked the UTI, she’ll be available very soon. She cannot wait to shower her new family with all the loves.

Queenie will likely do okay as an only dog, but as you can see she does enjoy the company of other dogs.black labrador retriever

Quick update on Miss Queenie. She continues to be the absolute best houseguest. That is, assuming you don’t mind a bit of drool and/or water here and there. She’s not the neatest eater/drinker, but we don’t mind at all. A few strategically placed towels and the floor simply gets ‘washed’ more often. Queenie will be hanging with us a bit longer as her UTI is not yet cleared up, and she’s gonna try some stronger med for a couple weeks. Meanwhile, we are making slow progress with the steps. She will now do a full flight going down (or has anyway) but not up. We’ll keep working. She also does well in the car and wants to get in on her own. She tries and can get her front paws up on the floor board, but needs a bit of a boost with the back end. That’s ok, we don’t mind helping.Black Labrador RetrieverQueenie LOVES everyone she meets, instantly. She has spent a good bit of time at our local pub. If we go without her now, we get in trouble. As is evident from the folks that plop down on the ground to love on her.Black Labrador Retriever She also took a trip to work (Penn State) with FM the other day. Although, she basically just sucked up my standing mat and I had to work around her.Black Labrador RetrieverOh and Queenie would also like everyone to know that she’s down THREE POUNDS (98.2)! No longer tipping the scale at three digits. Way to go Queenie!

It’s been over a week and Queenie is starting to show her quirky personality. She seems to be well on her way to kicking that nasty UTI. No accidents since those first couple days. Queenie continues to be a lovey dovey. She just wants pets and attention anytime she can wrangle it. This past week both FM & FD had to go to work outside the
house for two days.. Queenie spent 7ish hours in her crate with the resident dogs nearby with no issues, though she’s very happy to see you when you get home. She comes out of her crate and bounces 🙂 She can’t really jump, but she bounces up and down about 2 inches off the floor waiting for your attention. It’s adorable.Black Labrador RetrieverWe had some family over for Memorial Day and Queenie got to meet some new fur friends. She took it all in stride. Though we have realized she prefers when other dogs don’t get right up in her face, repeatedly (can’t say we blame her).Black Labrador RetrieverBlack Labrador RetrieverShe was so happy with her new friends, she flopped down for the doggy back wiggle. Two friends went out to be
sure she was okay. 🙂

In the next week, we will be doing some more work on getting in/out of the car and trying more than just a couple steps. Queenie also goes with us down to our local pub. She is a hit. She’s so friendly and just walks up to anyone for pets. She will sit right next to a trash can and never even look at it. She doesn’t pull you around the room trying to get to the kitchen either. After a bit, she’ll just sprawl out (all 100 lbs of her) on the floor for a snooze….and everyone
walks around her.Black Labrador RetrieverThis girl is just the sweetest!

While it’s only been three days, it feels like Queenie has been here much longer. She has settled into our routines and is becoming more comfortable. We notice that she now chooses to lounge around on the floor near us rather than in her crate. Black Labrador RetrieverBut if we get up and move across the room, she will come to see if there’s anything she can help with or any pets to be had. Queenie LOVES pets. So much so that you have to hide your hands and not engage if you want her to lay down and relax. She instantly took to our son who came home from work on Friday. She enjoyed having a floor companion.Black Labrador RetrieverWe visited the vet on Friday. Queenie was nervous, but did very well. It was confirmed that she, too, has a UTI. Otherwise, she is healthy and all other tests were negative (HW, lyme, etc). She did tip the scale at 101 pounds, but the vet did not seem overly concerned. He said that she’s ‘just a big girl’. He suggested trying to shave off about 10lbs. But when I asked about special food or treats and/or limiting treats, he said “she hasn’t had treats in 7 years, give her the treats.” He is exactly right, so we are not treating her any differently.Black Labrador RetrieverLast evening we went up to visit some friends at camp. Queenie got to meet Brookline Alum Stella (formerly Sage) and a couple of golden retrievers. The one golden was young (9 months and not neutered). Queenie was very quick to let him know, appropriately, that she was not going to tolerate his antics. (He was then put in the camper for obvious reasons.) She got along just fine with the other dogs and enjoyed ALL the pets from all the people. We realized that she has no awareness of personal space. With folks sitting in bag chairs around a fire, she would just go from one person to the next for more pets.Black Labrador RetrieverBlack Labrador Retriever Black Labrador Retriever Black Labrador RetrieverQueenie is very easy to have around. She loves her crate. Does wonderful overnight (last night was about 9 hours) and when we’ve had to leave her for a few hours. We take a few, super slow, half mile walks around our field a couple times a day mixed in with frequent walks around the yard. We are excited to watch Queenie get healthy and continue to enjoy the good life.

You wouldn’t have known she was just sprung from a breeding facility that she spent seven years on. This girl was all about it right from the start. She jumped (well, walked) right into my car and was the model passenger for the 2+ hour ride to her new foster home where she happily jumped out and met her two new foster sisters. Black Labrador Retriever Black Labrador Retriever Black Labrador Retriever Black Labrador RetrieverQueenie is just the sweetest and wants ALL the pets. She will nudge you if she feels you’re not petting her enough. She walks wonderfully on leash staying right with you and not pulling. She also seems to already know come and sit.Black Labrador RetrieverQueenie did well overnight in her crate. A bit restless but nothing major. Ate her breakfast like a champ and is learning the ropes. FM is working from home the rest of the week, and Queenie seems to prefer to lounge in her crate when there’s nothing going on. Black Labrador Retriever Black Labrador RetrieverWhat a doll. Stay tuned for more updates on this big ol’ sweetheart.Black Labrador Retriever
