Bogey Chocolate Labrador Retriever Mix Male 3 Years Old ID#3323

July 10, 2023
About Bogey:

Bogey is a ~3 year old chocolate Lab mix who came to Brookline in April from Mississippi after being found as a heartworm positive, emaciated stray. Before coming to Rescue, Bogey lived in a garage with a female dog and was briefly introduced to young puppies and small children.

Bogey has finished his heartworm treatment and is cleared for placement. He’s smart and eager to please, and will need a strong, patient adopter who will teach him how to be a good family member.

Bogey is a lovable lug – he thinks he’s a lapdog and wants to be cuddled. At 80+ lbs, he’s a LOT of lapdog and requires a capable adopter who can handle Bogey and help channel his energy appropriately.

Bogey is looking for the following in his new home:

  • Patient people who will housetrain him (he’s never lived in a house before) and continue his training so he can be a good family member.
  • A secure, physically fenced-in yard: he will give chase to wildlife or cats. He once tried to jump an enclosure at a shelter.
  • Plenty of physical exercise and mental stimulation – he would excel with a job to do.
  • Opportunities to socialize with other friendly dogs of similar temperament and energy levels.

Bogey is neutered, UTD on all shots and preventatives, and is in good physical health.

Good morning, Brookline!Chocolate Labrador Retriever Mix

Something awesome happened this week: I was cleared by the vet to go play in daycare and boy –what fun I’ve had! I’ve made two new friends – they’re little guys (Boston Terriers) and we love to play chase and wrestle (yes, I said wrestle–I’m very gentle–see the video).  I like hanging out on the play equipment, too – it’s a good perch for me to supervise the other pups.

Since I’ve been able to play in daycare and burn off some nervous energy, I’ve been more chill in my kennel run and less exuberant when I’m allowed out. I still enjoy snuggle time with the staff and getting cuddles and love. I’m gearing up to find my furever home.

I hope everyone has a safe 4th of July! More updates to come.

Bogey continues to do well after his last heart worm treatment (5/23) and is slowly getting more exercises (short leash walks) thanks to volunteer Stacie Durning. Stacie has visited Bogey several times and also graciously transported him to the vet for a few appointments.

Bogey is initially VERY excited coming out of his kennel (but who can blame him? He’s been cooped up, recuperating after his HW treatments) but once he has time to relieve himself and stretch, he will settle down.

Stacie shares: “What a difference a day makes and, maybe some familiarity. I went to HSFK to walk Bogey. When I got to his kennel he was standing there calmly. Of course he got a little rambunctious when I went in to put on his harness, (one of the workers helped) but he was better than yesterday. I was able to get him outside without the “plow pull”, however when we walked around the building and he saw the parking lot, he did try to army crawl his way to the cars.  Poor boy desperately wants out of that kennel.

I was able to re-direct him to the field with treats and believe it or not, he walked very nicely. He still had some pulling here and there, but corrected pretty quickly with command and treats. I switched him to an Easy Walk harness with the clip in the front which worked much better too.  We were able to walk at a nice slow pace most of the time and he got lots of sniffles and smells in to busy his mind for a little.

He goes back into the kennel easily so I would think he would go nicely into a crate too. Overall he is a sweet boy so far.  Even though I’ve only spent a little time with him, I think he will do great in a foster home.  After a few of days, with a routine, and a soft place to lay his head, I bet he’ll surprise the heck out of everyone!”

The kennel staff are also giving Bogey “snuggle time” a few times a week where they bring him into the kitchen area and sit on the floor and give him belly rubs and 1-on-1 attention. Bogey LOVES these sessions and will contentedly snuggle, chew on a toy, or just soak up the love.

Stacie shared some videos of Bogey walking nicely on leash.

Bogey also rode contentedly in my backseat (while buckled in via his harness) when I took him for his Bordetella vaccination today. He is still getting meds to keep him calm for the duration of his recuperation period, but we think once he is settled in a loving foster (or forever) home and gets consistent exercise, he can be weaned off of medication. Bogey here! Today was my second heartworm treatment, and I have to admit I’m a little sore in my hind end. I was a good boy at the vet’s office but was happy when the volunteer came to pick me up and bring me back to the kennel. I tried to convince her to sit with me so I could snuggle up in the backseat, but she said someone had to drive. I thought she should call us an Uber.

I was a little sleepy from the medicine they gave to help me relax, so I enjoyed resting in the soft back seat of her car. I kept putting my chin in the lady’s hand where she had it resting so she didn’t forget me. She told me she couldn’t forget about me—she said I remind her of a cross between Will Ferrell and Scooby Doo. I think that’s a compliment—do you?Labrador retriever mix

The people at the kennel are taking great care of me and ensuring that I don’t get too excited while my body gets rid of these nasty heart worms, but I sure do wish I could have a soft bed to lie on in a quiet home. I really want to play and run around, but doc said I have a few more weeks of restricted activity. I’m a strong boy and pull a hard on leash, so I can’t go for many walks right now. I do get to stretch my legs when my run is being cleaned and I enjoy the freedom—and attention from the staff.Labrador retriever mix

The kennel is getting busier as summer approaches, so I’m certainly curious about the hustle and bustle. I’d do best in a quieter foster home. Might you have space for me?

Love, Bogey

Bogey started chewing his foot but he’s getting multiple Kongs and always has a chew toy now. The staff give him lots of love and snuggles, but he’s easily excited and so it’s a balancing act. He’s bored in the kennel but on restriction due to his heartworm treatment.”

Bogey’s next treatments are 5/22 and 5/23; then, we’ll observe him for a few more weeks before retesting.

Bogey is getting Trazadone and Gabapentin to help keep him stay calm in the kennel, but he’d really be best off in a foster home.

Bogey is acclimating to life at the kennel and has been tolerating his first heartworm treatment. The vet added in some Trazadone and Gabapentin to help Bogey relax (he was very animated and excitable the first few days) and staff report now Bogey seems more contented to sit in his kennel and enjoy the breeze when the weather is nice.Chocolate Labrador Retriever mix

He’d still prefer to be in a comfy foster home instead of a concrete run, of course, but he’s safe and secure until someone steps up for him.

Bogey’s second and third heartworm treatments are scheduled for May 22 & 23.

Bogey’s a big boy (103 lbs) and a chocolate Lab mix (maybe mastiff? A mastador?) brown with white toes. He is reportedly very sweet and seeking reassurance from the staff. He was a bit clingy, but not in a bad way. Of course, he’s had a whirlwind of change in the past 72 hours!

Here’s a brief video of him checking out the friendly pups at daycare today.
