Pulling into the parking lot, I saw Zeek being a good boy, waiting patiently for me to arrive.

He had to be lifted into Deb’s car because he was too weak to climb in. Deb recalls her husband asking, “Do you think this dog will make it?” Her response, “I don’t know, but we have to try.”

For Annabelle was time-stamped, her puppies were too, Saved from certain euthanasia, by good people like you. Two wise women opened their home as well as their heart, So that Annabelle and her puppies would have the best start. Peggy and Mary gave them the life every Labrador should lead, Gifts of food, warmth, and love – what more could they need? Annabelle cared for her pups; she was such a good mother, Teaching them how to be a dog and to play nice with each other. As with all happy times, though, days quickly flew by, Peggy, Mary and sweet Annabelle would soon say goodbye. Brookline sent out the call to find homes for each one, Ready to be on their own, Annabelle’s care was now done. With the help of social media, interest in them grew, Applications came in from adopters old and new. Biscuit, Jambalaya, Grits, Gumbo, and Tater, Would find forever homes sooner than later. And as we followed their journey from birth to adoption, We knew that being time-stamped could have never been an option. A miracle of the season, we just love a happy ending. We’ve all heard the horror stories of overcrowded shelters resulting in too many good dogs being euthanized. Fortunately, a Brookline volunteer named Dot is a trusted liaison with ACCT in Philadelphia: a high-kill shelter where Brew Bear was being housed. The volunteers at ACCT will often let Dot know about a good dog that has potential but is nonetheless time-stamped to be euthanized due to space. For Brew Bear the clock was ticking. He had just one day left to live. The shelter called, Brookline answered, and an army of volunteers came to his rescue.

She was in bad shape, but even worse, this shelter had timing, so she was time stamped. This young, beautiful, vivacious dog, whose life was already threatened, was going to be threatened again, as she was at a high kill shelter.

As a farm dog with little socialization, Beau needed to learn what it was like to be a family dog living in a home. Beau’s foster family described him as a dog who loved being outside, but a dog that may have missed out on typical Lab puppy activities such as swimming and playing fetch. They also said that Beau was a fast learner, and they enjoyed experiencing his new world through his curious eyes. All of this was so true!

But once I saw her, I realized that fate really does have a way of intervening in life. Here I was with one farm dog no one wanted, and another unwanted dog, the exact same age, needing a good home.

She was fostered by Lesley, a Brookline volunteer, who eventually matched her with us. Lesley gave her baths, helped Lucy learn to eat from a bowl, and got her well on her way with housebreaking. While in foster care, Lucy also began her long journey of socialization to humans and a whole new world.

Fresh off the farm, I met up with Aspen and Brookline volunteer Maija, who provided Aspen’s rescue ride. For the final trip to our home, I placed a blanket on the car seat next to me for her, though she preferred to snuggle on my lap for the half hour ride.

For more than two months, Buddy and Duke were outside and alone. Through the kindness of a neighbor, they were fed and survived.

On the farm, she most likely lived outside in a cage resulting in a lack of hind end strength. She had untreated sores on her legs from licking due to boredom. Once rescued, she was given the medical care she needed and fostered by a great family who taught her what it was like to live inside a home.

Brookline Lab Rescue popped up and within five minutes we found Ruby -- a beautiful six or seven-year-old yellow girl. We read about her life as a "farm girl" and the hardships she endured.

Jax is an outgoing, friendly, loving dog who has been raised around a variety of people, kids and situations.  Jax knows some basic commands, and is very treat motivated, so very trainable.  He loves people, kids, other dogs, going in the water, playing with toys and balls, and wants to please.  He goes with the flow in a very busy household and does well with a lot of commotion. He is very sweet and would do well in a variety of settings.  He is also on the smaller side at 55lbs.  He settles fairly easily after about 1/2 hour of playtime, which is amazing for his age.  He will be a loving and loyal companion for a lucky family. There are surprising number of places for rent that require something like a pet resume, especially in college towns where most pets get dumped. Sometimes landlords that say no to pets only do so because they’re understandably worried, so even if a place doesn’t require a pet resume it can really help convince a landlord of pet that might be able to be registered as emotional support. People mainly abandon their pets because of a landlord who won’t allow them so anything that might help convince them I think would be extremely helpful.

This article may do a bit of unintentional finger pointing, but it still illustrates an important point: in the majority of cases, there are warning signs that precede a bite and they are rarely unprovoked. This is a good starting point to learn more about animal behavior and how recognizing certain warning signs may avoid bite situations. Resource Guarding - Guarding possessions from humans or other animals is normal behavior for dogs. Wild animals who successfully protect their valuable resources—such as food, mates and living areas—are more likely to survive in the wild than those who don’t. However, we find the tendency to guard valued items undesirable in our domestic pets, especially when the behavior is directed toward people. Resource guarding in dogs can range from relatively benign behavior, like running away with a coveted item or growling at an approaching person, to full-blown aggression, such as biting or chasing a person away.

- [Puppy Mills](https://brooklinelabrescue.org/resource/puppy-mills/): Puppy mills are nothing more than puppy breeding factories. Their operators consider the breeding dogs and offspring to be simply a salable commodity, just a “cash crop”. That means that the animals are housed in cramped crates or cages with wire floors, and stacked one on top of the other where bodily waste is left to fall through to the floor. They are usually confined in an environment with little or no climate control, often cold and damp in the winter and sweltering in the summer. Food and water is dispensed automatically. Human contact and canine interaction may only occur for breeding purposes which happens twice a year for breeding females. Exercise is not available for these breeders or their puppies as their existence is spent in a cage.

- [Wait vs. Stay](https://brooklinelabrescue.org/resource/wait-vs-stay/): Does your dog know how to stay? Traditionally, this word is used to tell the dog not to move unless told to do so. If dogs are really and truly trained to stay, they will remain in that position for hours. Is that really what you want to say to your dog in all situations when you say “stay?” Probably not. I get this vision of someone going to work for the day and telling the dog to “stay” as the door is closed. Nine hours later, the door opens and the dog is still in the same place! Ridiculous, huh? Instead, how about trying the “wait” command? When would you use “wait?” I can think of at least four situations. 1) Is your dog the type who needs to fly through the door to go outside? You open the door and out he goes, rushing past you? 2) And speaking of rushing, does your dog plow you down when descending the stairs? Or nearly knocks you over in a race to the top of the steps? 3) Do you like to take your dog for rides in the car? Even if you only take your dog for car rides when absolutely necessary, is she quick to jump out of the car? 4) Is your dog always out in front during your walks? All of these activities can be dangerous for your dog or for you and can usurp your leadership, sending clear signals to the dog that he or she is in charge! A little lesson in “wait”-ing may help. First, you need to train your dog to understand what “wait” means. The easiest way is to work at your back door, or whatever door you use to let the dog outside. Plan your training session for after your dog has been outside for exercise, not when he is waiting to go outside! This kind of training takes LOTS of patience because most dogs are like they are on springs when they think they are going outside. Grab some high quality treats and ask your dog to sit by the door. As your dog is sitting quietly, say “wait” as you s-l-o-w-l-y open the door just a crack. If the dog does not move, give her lots of praise and a treat. If the dog moves, simply ignore her and ask her to sit again. Most dogs get the idea rather quickly that they will not be let outside if they continue to pop up out of the sit. Gradually work on opening the door wider as your dog holds the position, and you are praising and treating. When your dog begins to understand what “wait” means, give him as release command such as “okay” to tell him that he doesn’t have to wait anymore. Make it bright and happy, and praise your dog for doing a great job. You can transfer this lesson to the car, using the car door the same way as you did the house door. As for working with steps, position your dog at the top of the stairs in a sitting position. Tell your dog to “wait” and take one step down. If the dog does not move, praise and treat and continue gradually moving down the stairs. Once your dog reliably responds to your “wait” command, you can use it easily during walks. If your dog likes to get way ahead of you, simply tell her to “wait” then stop walking so she gets the idea. - [On-Going Socialization is the Name of the Game](https://brooklinelabrescue.org/resource/on-going-socialization-is-the-name-of-the-game/): As a behavior counselor and dog trainer, I often see young pups that have missed the boat on early socialization or adults that are trying to "get socialized" later in life. In many cases, socialization is mistakenly considered to be something that you do when you first bring your dog home and that's it. Consider that one of the keys to having a behaviorally healthy dog is their ongoing exposure and positive experiences with the world around them. What is Socialization? Socialization is defined as your dog’s exposure to new people, places, animals, noises, vehicles, etc. A common pitfall of socialization is the belief that a dog is socialized if the dog is great with people and dogs as a youngster or gets along well with your family or the neighbor's dog. In fact, what you have is a dog that may be great as a pup, which doesn't guarantee that the dog will be the same as an adult. Or, you may have a dog that is well socialized to a couple of dogs and people but that doesn't mean that the dog will be as comfortable or friendly with strange dogs and people. The dog you have at 8 weeks, 8 months and 8 years is not the same dog you had even a month ago. So when do you start socializing your dog? Young Pups... Socialization begins the moment your dog is born. For puppies, the critical period of socialization is the first 12 weeks of the pup's life. This is a limited window for guardians to introduce their pup to other friendly pups; people of all ages and appearances; and places in the real world. According to Animal Behaviorist, Dr. Ian Dunbar, "Your puppy needs to meet at least one hundred people in the first three months of their life." Others may argue that your pup shouldn't be outside or around other dogs until the dog is 4 months old and fully vaccinated. Though pups are highly susceptible to distemper or parvovirus before having received their adult shots, their behavioral health is as important as their physical health. Dogs who are too sheltered as puppies, even though it may be “for their own good”, often develop fear, anxiety and aggression issues. According to R. K. Anderson DVM, Diplomate American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine, "The risk of a dog dying because of infection with distemper or parvo disease is far less than the much higher risk of a dog dying (euthanasia) because of a behavior problem." Maximize your dog’s exposure to the world, while minimizing their exposure to disease. Continued Socialization... Whether you have a pup or an adult dog, your dog's behavior is never set in stone. Hormone levels fluctuate during adolescence, and as your dog continues to grow and develop, their interactions with the world will change. It's important to continue to make new dogs, people and places as positive as possible. Here are a few easy things that you can continue to do to maintain your dog's sociability: • Take your dog on daily walks and say "good" and treat when your dog sees another dog or person, even if your dog seems fine with them. • Don't force interactions with people and dogs. If you're dog is uncomfortable, listen to your dog. Let them proceed at their own pace. Don't force them to play or restrain them to accept petting from children or strangers. • Allow your dog to initiate contact with people and reward the dog when he/she does. • Don't reprimand or reward your dog if they bark or show fear toward a dog or person (this only reinforces fear and makes it doubly negative for your dog). • If your dog is dog friendly, continue off-leash play in fenced areas with different, appropriate dogs a few times a week. But don’t expect every dog owner to be as responsible are you are—keep your eyes peeled for challenging situations. Whether you have a pup or an adult dog, the important lesson is that socialization does not end at puppy hood. In fact, it's your dog's ongoing exposure to new dogs, people and places on their daily life that has them continue to be well-adjusted companions.
