Nyssa Chocolate Labrador Retriever Female 4 Years Old ID #3604
Sometimes the hardest beginnings lead to the brightest futures. Nyssa, a sweet 4-year-old purebred Chocolate Lab is living proof of that! Nyssa was living in horrid conditions on a farm until a good samaritan saved her. The good samaritan and his wife have 3 dogs and were not able to keep her so he contacted Brookline. She lived outside in a kennel for 3 years in her own feces and questionable protection from the weather. She was so fortunate her good samaritan saved her and now she is ready for her new life. We had a great check-in at the vet! They were so happy to see how much the PT exercises and stretches have helped—Nyssa is now using her back right leg again. We’ll be continuing her PT along with regular walks. Her skin and coat are also looking so much better—the medicated baths are really making a difference, so we’ll keep those up 1–2 times a week.
Her weight is holding steady at around 57 pounds, and she’s still happily eating three meals a day.
Nyssa absolutely loves going for walks and car rides. Nyssa loves playing with her resident labs and has started to run a bit after them in the yard! She even took a trip to Cape May and had so much fun exploring a new place!
Enjoy this video of Nyssa on a walk!
She is scheduled to be spayed on April 28, 2026. She continues to be incredibly friendly with everyone she meets—just a sweet, happy girl all around!

Nyssa has made great progress this week. We have been doing the PT exercises that the vet wanted her to do. The first few days were tough for her. We are happy to share that she started to use her back leg again. She still holds it up especially when she stands from lying down. She has even wanted to go for walks and stands at her leash for us to take her! She is now taking short little walks. This is huge progress as she would not get up from her bed that often.
She has been getting a medicated bath 3 times a week and her skin is beginning to feel better. She has a follow up appointment on Thursday, 4/2/26 to see how she is progressing with her PT, her skin and a weight check. At her appointment, we will determine if she has been spayed.
She is starting to show some interest in toys. She brought a few toys to her bed this week and even carried around a ball!
Thank you to Brookline for her welcome box! It’s so cute to see her interest in playing a bit now!
As she is feeling better, it’s so nice to see her personality! She is such a friendly and sweet girl!

Nyssa has had a lot going on! She favored her back right paw but then completely stopped using it and keeps it tucked up. After a few vet trips, they determined that she had a prior fracture and her living conditions caused her to lose muscle mass in that leg. We are doing PT exercises and stretches with her. She lets us move her leg and her tail wags and wags as we tell her “good girl!” She also is on an antibiotic for her skin. She had lots of sores from her previous living conditions that needed treatment. She loves her bath treatments and sits so nice in the tub.
In spite of all that, Nyssa continues to be nothing but a sweetheart. She only wants love and lots of pets!
Her favorite thing right now is laying on her bed on our back deck enjoying the weather.
One of our labs will often lay next to her! She has been so good with our 2 labs.
She is getting the treatment she needs and hopefully will be feeling so much better!

Nyssa is very thin and has several scars from her life in the kennel. This poor girl is adjusting well to life off the farm. She is such a sweet girl! She has been very friendly with everyone she meets. She is currently living with our two resident labs. She hasn’t had any accidents so far and has quickly learned to go to the back door to go outside. The resident dogs have been great leaders!
She is eating several small meals throughout the day to help her gain a healthy weight. The vet said she is such a beautiful girl and should gain around 20 pounds.
Nyssa is getting stronger with going up and down steps. She sleeps so peacefully on her dog bed.
She seems to enjoy exploring the yard and going for small walks. She is a snuggle bug and loves to lay right next to someone.
We’ll be sharing more about this sweet girl soon-stay tuned!
