Baylor Chocolate Labrador Retriever Female 8 Years Old ID#3666

Chocolate Labrador RetrieverMeet Baylor, the most adorable 8 year old female chocolate chip you will ever meet! Baylor has arrived at Brookline to find a new home because her former owner had to move into assisted living and could no longer care for her. She is an affectionate, happy, curious and enthusiastic girl who loves a good petting session, a ride in the car, some tasty treats and people to shower her with the love she deserves. Please read her blog from the bottom up to learn all about her journey while in foster care.

We’ve had a few more days with Baylor and can share a some new facts about her.Chocolate Labrador RetrieverBaylor spent some time with her former owner’s great granddaughter before coming to Brookline and she told us that Baylor loves to sit on the couch.  We hadn’t seen much interest in the furniture out of Baylor at first, but now that she is more comfortable in her surroundings, she is checking out all the couches in the house as if it’s her job.  Her forever home will hopefully be one where couch snuggles are a regular treat!Chocolate Labrador Retriever Chocolate Labrador RetrieverWe have also learned that even though Baylor only had a small yard in her first home, she loves the explore ours and stretch her legs with games of fetch.  We’re not sure if someone previously taught her “drop” or if she is just a natural, but watch her run, fetch, drop and repeat in this video:

Chocolate Labrador RetrieverBaylor also has been making steady progress with her socialization with her two foster sisters.  They interact together wonderfully when outside in the yard and Baylor has grown comfortable with everyone when they relax in the house.  She does exhibit a bit of stress/anxiety when either of the resident dogs unexpectedly enter the room (especially if they come from behind her – which makes her nervous) and will give a low grumble.  The two residents never push things further though and Baylor will relax once she sees she is safe.  Each day gets smoother and we can see that she is simply a bit nervous and appropriately communicating her boundaries to the other dogs.  After a full life as an only-dog, we understand why she feels like this and are encouraged to see progress.

Since Baylor is already fully house trained and understands the rhythms of life as a house pet (something we can’t always say about our foster dogs in their first week), she’ll be ready to find her forever home soon!

Baylor is now about 48 hours into her stay in foster care and is doing very well.Chocolate Labrador RetrieverShe has been easing into her adjustments to her new surroundings and her two foster “sisters” Ruby and Autumn.

Since she seemingly didn’t have much socialization with other dogs or new places, she has been a bit tense now and then.  We’re confident that it won’t be long before she is more comfortable.Chocolate Labrador RetrieverShe seems most relaxed when we go outside and get some yard time.  She loves to sniff new smells and stretch her legs.  We imagine she will really love outdoor adventuring in her new home.Chocolate Labrador RetrieverThis morning Baylor had a vet visit to get her new microchip and take a look at her overall health.  She was nervous about being examined but the kind staff at Washington Crossing Animal Hospital did a great job calming her.

One of the issues we hoped to address was her overgrown nails.  It had clearly been a very long time since Baylor had a pedicure and her nails looked like they would be causing her some pain. We were expecting a long process of multiple vet trips for clipping but imagine our delight when the team were able to trim almost all of the extra length off today without hitting the quick even once.  The exam table was covered in nail clippings!

Take a look at her pretty feet now!Chocolate Labrador RetrieverWe hope that feels much better for her!

This morning Baylor tried out playing with a few toys and enjoyed chewing on a rope bone, a nylabone and this stuffed sloth toy:Chocolate Labrador Retriever

We’ll continue learning all about this pretty girl and add updates as we get ready to make her available for adoption soon!Chocolate Labrador Retriever

Baylor is a beautiful chocolate girl who has joined our home for a bit while we find her the perfect family who will give her all the love and attention she deserves.  She arrives as an owner surrender which means she is already pretty used to what it means to live in a house and be a companion.  She’s house trained, crate trained, spayed, up to date on her vaccinations and passed all her bloodwork screenings for parasites.  Not a lot of work for foster mom (FM) and foster dad (FD) to do other than help her decompress and adjust to her change of scenery.  I must say, being Baylor’s fosters is a pretty good gig!

After saying goodbye to her former owner’s great granddaughter, rides in 2 cars, a stop at Tractor Supply for a bath, and several yummy treats to reward her good behavior, Baylor arrived at her new foster home and had a chance to explore the big yard she now gets to play in.Chocolate Labrador Retriever Chocolate Labrador Retriever Chocolate Labrador RetrieverShe was an angel for the ride and the bath, showing us that she’s up for adventure and new experiences without complaint.

After allowing her some time to sniff every fallen leaf on the ground and go potty, we then introduced her to her two new foster sisters and then we all went inside to see the house.  Her curiosity carried her to every corner of our home, including right up and down the stairs to the second floor, so we know we won’t need to teach her to tackle the stairs, either.  She’s seemingly very comfy as a house pet!

Eventually her enthusiasm burned up enough energy to convince her to settle in for a nap on the rug near FD.Chocolate Labrador Retriever Chocolate Labrador RetrieverWe got in some more yard time before the sun went down and then fed her dinner.  Even though she is trim and in great shape at 62 pounds, she has the typical Labrador appetite and chomped through her kibble with gusto!  Her food motivation will definitely help her future owners with training!

Since she had been sleeping in a crate previously, we set ours up for her in the bedroom and she got in a nice long night of very sound sleep.  She didn’t make a peep until FD got out of bed, which started her tail wagging.Chocolate Labrador RetrieverHere’s a few key things we have learned about this adorable chocolate chip so far:

She loves pets and affection and seems more people-focused than dog-focused.  She should

be perfectly fine as an only-dog or in a home with other pups.

After a bath, her coat is very soft and smooth.  Her nails were neglected and very long so she will need some attention to those to get them looking as cute as the rest of her.

She likely didn’t get much time outside or on the leash with her elderly former owner, so she has some learning to do on how to behave on walks.  She’s not a very large labbie, though, and her tugging isn’t very hard to manage.

She is very fit and energetic for an 8 year old lab and if you met her on the street you’d probably assume she was just a young adult.  She’s a classic American Labrador with long legs and a trim frame. It seems like she has 8 years of playfulness and activity to catch up on!Chocolate Labrador RetrieverPlease stay tuned for updates and if you have a place in your home for an adorable milk chocolate morsel like Baylor, get ready to apply to adopt her soon!
