Bubby Yellow Labrador Retriever Male 1 Year Old #3518
Meet Bubby! Bubby is a handsome 1 year old purebred Labrador that was surrendered by his owner. When the owner got Bubby, his Mom would watch Bubby during the day when he was working his 8-10hr shifts. Unfortunately, her health has declined and Bubby was spending his days alone in the basement. The owner wanted a better life for Bubby and made the difficult decision to reach out to Brookline to help re-home Bubby. Please read his blog from the bottom up to learn more about him.

Bubby is ready to find his forever home. He is a very sweet guy who still has a lot of puppy in him. Bubby knows a lot of basic commands like sit, down, stand from a sit, working on stay and leave it. He wants to grab my pockets with treats so he hears leave it a lot. He is very food motivated which help with the training. He has also gotten a lot better walking on lead. I use a front clip harness. He is very athletic, today I threw his ball all 4 feet came off the ground and he caught the ball. I managed to catch a photo with him jumping but not as impressive as his first jump. Bubby needs exercise and to work with his new family to continue his training. He is smart and loves to be with his people. He is still very much a puppy brain in a dogs body.
Bubby needs a fenced yard. He loves to run in the big yard at BCK. We always let him run for 10-15 minutes then call him over to do some training. Then he gets to run again. If he doesn’t get exercise his has trouble focusing.
Bubby is a jumper especially when he first sees me or any of he staff. We think kids over 8 would be better for him. If the adoptive family works with Bubby not to jump younger kids would be okay. They need to be aware that Bubby could steal food. Also with exercise Bubby is jumping less. The old adage a tired dog is a good dog sums up Buddy.
Bubby used to go to the dog park with his owner and did well with dogs but a resident dog is not required. I think he would enjoy it. He does love his people. He gets very attached to all the staff. He races to see me which makes me feel wonderful. He even avoids hitting me which I appreciate. He is learning!

Bubby continues to be the star pupil. He not only knows the verbal commands but also hand signals. We have been practicing and he is really getting it.
Today, I had PT and arrived at BCK later than usual. Logan already had Bubby in the big yard. When he saw me he came racing over. I got a huge greeting which of course included jumping on me. He also gave me kisses too. It’s true dogs give the best greetings. No one is ever as excited to see me as my dogs and Bubby. Bubby thinks I am his personal treat dispenser. He has come a long way in 3 weeks. He knows basic obedience now; sit, down, stand, heel. His leash skills have improved. His recall is so much better. Sometimes he has selective hearing but I carry a squeaker from a toy and use that to get his attention. It seems to work.
We have been working on some fun things. I am trying to teach him touch. All he has to do is tap his nose to my palm and he gets a reward. He is doing better. I also have taught him through my legs. He stops and I smack his butt. He seems to like that.He still jumps although it is improving. He can be very grabby with pockets or the lead. We are working on leave it. He will try to steal a treat, I correct him, he sits immediately then I take a step and back to the pocket. It’s a lot of repetition right now. He really is a good boy. He has a puppy brain still.
Bubby is going to be available for adoption soon. He needs the following
1. Fenced yard. He has a lot of energy to expend and he has trouble focusing. By being able to run in a yard he is easier to work with and walk. He doesn’t pull much. He loves to run
2. He will need a family that will continue to work with him. He needs more training, so his family needs to be committed to working with him.
3. He could be a lot for little kids. He was exposed to an 8 and 12 yr old. He was a little too much for the 8 yr old. I think a savvy adopter could work with Bubby. Also with consistent exercise Bubby may not as energetic.
Bubby is a diamond in the rough. He will be a great dog for the right family. He is going to need consistent exercise and training.

Bubby has been at BCK for 8 days now. He continues to do well. On Sunday we worked a little on down. He had no interest in even trying. So we let him run around the yard. Talk about unbridled joy. He loves to run and he is very bouncy. I think his name should be Tigger.
Once he got some of his energy out we worked on recalls and down. He did well with the recalls. He did complete a few really good downs but he was bored. We called it a day it was getting warm. Bubby needed a well deserved siesta.
On Monday, we worked on down and walking politely. First we let him run around the yard for 20 minutes just practicing recalls. Then we began to train. He was lying down using the command and luring him into the correct position. I was floored. He also did well walking on lead.
He wants to pull to sniff things he can’t reach. He is improving a lot. He is young and is just learning.
Today Bubby went to his vet appointment to get bloodwork prior to neutering. He was very excited and was jumping, which is how he always is in the beginning. We brought him out and he got to spend 30 minutes chasing the ball. He is really good at catching it. He is also good about bringing it back. He doesn’t always drop. Today he was flopping down in the shade. Then off we went to the vet. He needs to be secured in the back otherwise he will be sitting on you perhaps even driving.
Bubby weighs 65lbs. He is a nice size. Of course he wanted to jump on everyone. He was putting his paws on the counter. One of the volunteers was helping me. He stole her sunglasses. He is just such a puppy. He was grabbing everything he could get his mouth on; toys, trash, sunglasses anything nearby. But he is also very loving. On the way back to BCK he was resting his head on my arm, giving me kisses. I haven’t had the opportunity to just sit with him. He gets so excited when he gets out of his run. So this was a nice treat to see how sweet he can be.
This boy has so much potential. He is a great size takes treats gently and really loves people. I have become very fond of him, he is a good boy. Bubby has an appointment to get neutered on June 10th. Sometime this week I am going to introduce Bubby to Phoebe and Betty. I want to see how he does with other dogs. Stay tuned for more adventures from Bubby.

Bubby has been at BCK for almost a week. He is settling in well. We have been doing some training, and he already has a good sit.Bubby is learning stand from a sit, stay (very short stays about 5 sec to begin with) and we are trying to teach down. Today was the first time we successfully got him to lie down. He did it about 4 times. Then he was over it. We have also been working on recalls. Bubby usually will come when he feels like it, right now. It’s a work in progress. My helper Logan and I stand about 6 feet apart. We take turns calling Bubby and asking him to sit. Then we each take a step back and repeat the process. He is doing well and starting to get it.
Bubby likes to jump especially when he first gets out of the kennel. We correct every time. What we notice is when he jumps he turns his body away when he lands. He is starting to get it. We have been letting him run for 10 or 15 minutes in the big yard. He needs to get rid of some energy before we start training.
He has trouble focusing because he is a young 14 month old puppy boy. He also pulls like a champ when he wants to see something. Today, I put a harness on him with a front clip and he was much better. We did let him run before so that also helped.I would say that Bubby needs a family that can provide lots of exercise. He needs to run and burn off his energy. A fenced in yard would help. His family could throw the ball a bunch to tire him out before going for a walk. He is very sweet. He takes treats gently. He is very handsome. He just never got much training but with consistent positive reinforcement, he will learn quickly.

Today, Bubby had his rescue ride. We made a stop at the vet to get him microchipped, 4DX tested and brought UTD on his vaccinations. He was a good boy while we waited and did well getting everything done.
After the vet appointment, we had an hour ride to Kamp where he will be staying temporarily until we can find a foster home for this handsome boy. He was super happy to get a romp out in the big yard!
