DD Black Labrador Retriever Female 10 Years Old #3587
Meet DD. DD is a sweet 10 yo Labrador mix whose owner fell on hard times and was homeless and living in car for the last few years. Luckily for DD’s owner, she was helped by the Sheriffs Department’s Outreach officers to find them housing but unfortunately for DD this housing didn’t allow for dogs. When her owner moved into her new housing, DD remained living in the car with the owner’s friend who was also homeless. The Outreach officers contacted Brookline to see if we could help. DD was evaluated and approved back in May to come into the rescue but her owner wasn’t ready to give up on finding a solution that would allow her keep DD. Unfortunately, she was unable to find DD temporary housing, and made the gut wrenching decision to surrender her to Brookline so that she would be safe from the summer heat. Please read DD’s blog from the bottom up to learn more about her while in foster care.
DD is available for our Silver Muzzle Program: If a family adopts one of our Silver Muzzled Labs, their original adoption donation will be considered perpetual. After your Silver Muzzled Lab passes on, you may adopt another appropriate Silver Muzzled Lab from us, without an additional fee, following an approved follow-up home evaluation. This will continue as long as you remain an approved adopter.

DD has been with us for only a week, but has quickly settled in to living in our home.
She is happy to get pets and scratches, and especially treats from the whole family. She especially loves butt and neck scratches and getting her treats after she goes outside. She has the cutest little wooh, wooh, woof when she looking for a scratch, treat or to go outside.
DD enjoys leisurely sniffing around the yard when it’s cool outside.
Her previous owner reported that she LOVES swimming. She’s taking a trip to our lake house for the 4th so hopefully she gets some swimming in while we are there.
She also enjoys a good roll in the grass!
When she’s ready to go back inside, she high tails it to the back door, especially if she’s out in the mid-day sun. She can’t wait to get back in the A/C! DD doesn’t wander far from her people so she would do well in a home with or without a fenced yard.
DD has learned our routine quickly and settles well in the house and likes to relax on a dog bed where her people are hanging out or working from home. She does also like to cool off on the tile after being outside in the heat.
She enjoys squeaky tennis balls, stuffed animals and chewing on meaty bones.

DD is very easy to have in the house, and will transition to a new adoptive home with ease.

DD continues to get more and more comfortable with each passing day and is by far the easiest foster I’ve had in my fostering “career.”
Last night at bedtime, I slept in our guest bedroom because I had to get up in the middle of the night to take a medication for a procedure that I had this morning and didn’t want to wake my husband in the process. DD wanted to join me and when I got in bed, she put her feet up and wanted to join me in bed instead of heading to her dog bed. Since it was just us girls, I gave her a special treat and boosted her up on the bed. She slept like a log all night even when I turned on the lights to get my meds. She’ll be back on her dog bed tonight but has been happy with that arrangement since she arrived.
Today, she found a squeaky tennis ball and brought it to me to play. She loved squeaking it, playing a little fetch, and catch. It’s great to see her playful side start to come out!
DD met my oldest daughter today, and ran right up to her for pets, and with lots of tail wags. She is very friendly with everyone she has met.
She had a couple of hours in the house alone this morning while we were out at my appointment, and did really well. She was super happy to see us again and ran right over for pets and kisses. When we are home, she sticks around her people through out the day and typically settles on the carpet or dog bed in the same area. The big LL Bean seems to be her favorite spot since it has a good vantage point for a good portion of the first floor, especially the kitchen.
She is an excellent office buddy, or a loyal daily companion who is content by your side. DD is a “D”efinite “D”elite!

DD’s first 24 hours here have gone extremely smoothly! Last night she settled on the floor next to my husband while we relaxed by the TV.
After our last trip outside, she settled on a dog bed on the floor in our bedroom and went right to sleep, and only stirred when the alarm rang at 5am. DD slept in a bit longer and came out to the kitchen to see what was going on around 5:30am. She went right out and did her business and then came in for breakfast. We went right back out to finish off the mornings business and she was ready to come in and chill on a dog bed while we drank our morning coffee.
My husband reported that she was no problem while I was out at my morning workout.
Next up was bath time for this girl. Though I can’t say she loved it, she was very good in the bath and didn’t try to jump out. She might be a couple of pounds lighter with all the hair that came off. She did the typical Lab face rub and settled in the big bed in the sun to dry off.
We went for a short walk this morning and she walks very well on leash and seemed to enjoy sniffing all the smells. We only started with a short walk today, since it’s hot and I don’t want to do too much with her too fast.
DD has no problem navigating stairs, though she’s a bit slower and more cautious going down.
So far, she has been super easy to have in the house. This girl won’t be in foster care for too long since she is super sweet and great in the house. Get your applications in now, this girl is definitely special!

DD had her rescue ride today. I met DD’s owner at the vet so that we could do the transfer and I could get her UTD on all the vaccinations. DD owner loved her immensely and spent all her available resources caring for her. She provided her with flea and tick preventatives, and got her Rabies vaccination and needed medical care from the Women’s shelter. Though living in a car, DD had her bed, blanket and toys and daily meals of chicken and rice, on top of all the love from her Mom.
The hustle and bustle of the walk in clinic waiting room didn’t phase DD and she happily greeted each new visitor at the door.
She was calm cool and collected in the waiting with the 3 other dogs, and 2 cats, even when one of the dogs was barking at her.
DD was a wonderful patient, and was very brave getting her vaccinations, 4DX test, ear swab and toenails trimmed.
After the vet, we drove back to her new foster home.
She explored the yard, did her business and then settled down for a good nap after all the excitement.
She settles very well when me or my husband settles in one spot, and has been doing all of her business outside.
DD did good meeting resident dog Sammy, and they have been both doing their own thing and co-existing in the house together without any issues. Stay tuned for more updates tomorrow!
