Jade #2 Chocolate Labrador Retriever Female 9 Years Old #3589
Meet Jade! Super sweet, 9 yo purebred Jade came into the rescue when Jade’s owner suffered an unfortunate health crisis and as a result Jade has been living alone in her house with only periodic visits from the owner’s daughter to feed her and let her out. Fortunately, she reached out to Brookline for help and now Jade is safe in a foster home.
Jade is eligible for our Silver Muzzle Program: If a family adopts one of our Silver Muzzled Labs, their original adoption donation will be considered perpetual. After your Silver Muzzled Lab passes on, you may adopt another appropriate Silver Muzzled Lab from us, without an additional fee, following an approved follow-up home evaluation. This will continue as long as you remain an approved adopter

Jade has been doing really well since her last post. Aside from the increase in seasonal allergies, she is enjoying the change in temperatures… more walks, more time outside, and more FETCH! Her favorite hobbies continue to be fetching her ball, ripping apart toys, and lounging around in the yard.
She has improved so much with her reactions to dogs – as long as we are prepared with treats, she is ready to practice her training instead of engaging with dogs that she sees on walks. She definitely understands that dog = treat, and she goes straight to my hand when she sees one. We are keeping her busy inside with lots of puzzle feeders, nose work games, and continuing her training indoors.
Last week, Jade did have a few neurological symptoms that took us to the vet. She was back to her normal self in minutes and not presenting symptoms by the time of her appointment. We and the vet are hoping that this was a one off episode and did not see evidence that anything bigger was going on. We are monitoring closely, giving her a very low dose steroid for the next few weeks, and starting a hydrolyzed protein diet to address allergies and reduce inflammation in her body. Keep your fingers and toes crossed that Jade doesn’t deal with anything like this going forward!
Yesterday we hosted our towns “Porch Fest”, and had over 100 people at the house! Jade hung out in the yard all day, and had the best day of her life as everyone came around back to throw some tennis balls for her. She met kids of all ages and lots of new people, and she was the perfect hostess. She loved everyone she met, and may have had a bit of a “last hurrah” with everyone sneaking her treats before she starts her HP diet.

Another exciting few weeks for Jadie girl!
Jade has been working with a trainer, Laura Garber, to help her feel more comfortable with passing dogs on walks. Jade is a perfect walking companion… but when another dog gets too close, it makes her very nervous.
We’ve been using positive reinforcement methods to help Jade change her mind about other dogs – instead of getting scared when another dog gets close, she gets excited and now looks to me for a treat! She’s made great progress in a few short weeks. Unless the dog is really close to her, Jade doesn’t even notice they are walking by … so we are now pushing her limits and getting closer to dogs on our walk. Luckily we have lots of friendly neighbors who are supporting Jade in her training.
We brought Jade to Vermont for a Jade-cation last week, and she had a great time hiking in the green mountain state! We met plenty of dogs on trails, and she really got to put her training skills to use. She was complimented by strangers for being “the best behaved dog they’ve seen on the trails,” and of course lots of compliments for being a beautiful girl. She did need a lift across a bridge that she didn’t like… luckily FD was there to save the day.
Jade even protected us from a bear in the woods out front of our house! We hit lots of thunderstorms and traffic on our drive up which resulted in 8 hours in the car, and Jade kept her cool and remained relaxed the whole drive. She did try to join us in the front a few times, but who can blame her… we all knew the treats were up there!

This weekend we went to Chicago, which meant Jade got to check into Casa B. – She had such a great time, she hasn’t stopped talking about it since we picked her up! Nicole wrote a guest blog about their weekend together 🙂 Nicole and Garri were great hosts and catered to all of Jade’s needs … lots of walks and fetch make Jade a very happy girl!
Jade’s Summer Weekend Getaway
Jade had a great weekend at Casa B., and we were thrilled to host her. She arrived with her small suitcase packed with prized toys, treats, food, and bowls. She scoped out the accommodations and quickly confirmed they’d do, especially when she spotted a full basket of toys ready for destruction.
She found a new favorite ball almost immediately and insisted we head straight to the backyard to test our fetch skills. After many throws, she decided we passed.
Later, once work wrapped up, we took Jade for a long walk to explore more of the neighborhood. We passed a few houses with dogs who tried to get her attention, but she kept her cool and just kept walking.
After dinner and a few final runs around the yard, she settled in for the night, content to doze off while we watched a movie.
The rest of the weekend was a blast. Jade fit right into our routine, with many walks and rounds of backyard fetch. We introduced her to watermelon (a hit), and she got to sample some homemade sourdough which we heard was her favorite. She took a nap while we ran our errands at the grocery store and greeted us with a big smile when we returned. In honor of National Ice Cream Day, we took a walk to the local creamery for a peanut butter pup cup.
Jade had no patience for how many licks it would take to get to the bottom and freed the ice cream from the cup to enjoy the whole thing in four delicious bites.
She ended her last day with lots of cuddles and belly rubs before calling it a night. An active senior needs her beauty rest!
On Monday morning, her foster mom came to pick her up—just after Jade provided some very helpful work-from-home support on a Zoom call.
Jade made it her mission over the weekend to dismantle the dog toys in the basket, but they were no match for her—all but two ended up fully intact. As a reward, Jade got to take her new  favorite red ball home.
She let us know we were excellent hosts and has an open invitation to return anytime. We loved Jade’s goofy personality and active energy and we’re amazed no one has adopted this sweet girl yet. We can’t wait to see her again.

Jade has had a very exciting couple of weeks!
Foster Fam went on vacation and Jade got to go visit with Aunt Amy. She made Amy and her family laugh with her weird little personality, and showed them that she is indeed the master of Fetch. Amy spoiled Jade with some new toys – including her infamous Blue Ball, which has perhaps usurped her orange fetch stick as her favorite toy!!! When Jade lost her Blue Ball, Amy surprised her with a new one in the mail. She is a very lucky girl 🙂
Amy reported that Jade loved riding in her husband’s truck, insisted on playing fetch even in the rain, that she was a good girl, and that they loved her! Add another member to the Jade Fan Club.
Amy also took Jade swimming – with the help of a long lead, we learned that Jade is indeed a water dog and loves swimming. FM is looking into some swim options so Jade can get back out there and practice her doggy paddle.
Jade was matched with a family and it unfortunately didn’t work out, but she is comfy in her foster home for now. She got a new collar to boost her self esteem and make her feel extra beautiful.
We switched Jade’s food and she’s responded great to it – her picky appetite and tummy problems are a thing of the past, and her coat has been extra silky.
I shared some photos of Jade with her previous family, and we found out Jade’s birthday. Jade is a halloween baby, and was born 10/29/2015. You may be surprised that a 10 year old has this much energy, but if you’ve ever had a chocolate lab before… you may know that many of them never seem to slow down.
Hot days have limited Jade’s exercise, but she is still finding time to get outside and play. Her best buddy the mailman even stopped by for a round of fetch and belly rubs!

Jade has been super helpful with yard work the past few weekends, as FM + FD are finally working on the landscaping. After playing in the yard for hours and laying in a big mud puddle, Miss Jade had a spa day. This dog who has not shed a single hair since she arrived decided she was finally ready to blow out her entire winter coat!! What we have left is the sleekest, silkiest version of Jade yet.
She was rewarded for being such a star at bath time with a new toy… a flying saucer. She promptly took down the UFO, only to find a martian inside!! When she destroyed the martian, she was left with a squeaky ball. She was very pleased with her prize.
Every good weekend ends with a pup cup, and Jade enjoyed hers on the front lawn.
She is such a good girl, and so much fun. Time to relax!

Jade has been with us for a little over 2 months now and is past her last call. She has not had any applicants that fulfill all her needs.
Jade is an amazing dog. She is incredibly sweet and loving, she loves all people and is eager to meet new friends, she is good with kids, she is responsible on her own in the house, she loves to play, she doesn’t chew, she doesn’t shed, she doesn’t mind being bathed, brushed, or handled in any way, she settles easily, and she is good on walks. We love her very much!!
She is ready for her forever home. Her only requirements are that she needs to be an only dog, and she would love a yard to play fetch in.
If are interested in Jade, please reach out to info@brooklinelabrescue.org for more information.

Jade is fast asleep after a long week of partying at Camp Crawford! Foster Mom + Dad had some travel, so Jade got to spend the week enjoying a new family. This was a good experience to see how Jade might act her first week in her forever home – and she did great. As expected, she was pretty anxious the first 24 hours, but when she realized how much fun she was going to have, she settled right in.
She enjoyed a large yard to play fetch with the kids in, and access to nearby trails for lots of walks. I’m not sure if Jade is just a natural model, or her babysitters have some serious camera skills, but Jade came home with a fresh new portfolio of glamour shots for us to enjoy!
Her babysitters said Jade was “mostly a model dog citizen” and saw a lot of the same behaviors we have here: energetic and playful, very curious, incredibly sweet to people, likes to keep some distance away from other dogs, and a tendency to try and sneak out if you leave the door open – which are all things for her future home to be aware of. They also noted a new quirk on Jade: She likes to hide out in the bathtub! We don’t have a tub in our house, so we haven’t had the pleasure of walking in on a melted puddle of chocolate in the tub.
We’re happy to have Jade back, and she is back on the hunt for her forever fetch partner! I’ve updated Jade’s Placement questionnaire with new info on her allergies, and her preference for having a yard.

Jade had a fun weekend celebrating Easter with her foster family! After a change in plans, it turned out that we would be hosting our family. Jade was super enthused about this, because it meant she now had a dozen choices for fetch partners!
She was very well behaved around the crowd, and got along with everyone – from 3 month old squeaky babies, to crazy little kids running around with toys, and men she doesn’t know wearing baseball caps! She doesn’t beg or steal from the table unless you invite her over. She stayed away from the doors and gates and we didn’t worry about her getting out. She just wanted to be part of the action and soak up as much love as possible. She did deliver her fetch stick to everyone’s laps, and found a very willing partner in my 7 year old niece who wanted to practice her softball throws.
Our neighbors were also hosting Easter and had 3 small dogs visiting! Jade went to the fence to sniff them, but even when the neighbor dogs were barking and charging the fence line, Jade kept her manners and did not bark. We were very proud of her for keeping her cool so well.
We’re continuing to monitor Jade with other dogs – if they are on the other side of the street or in a yard, she has no reaction and does not even notice them. If they need to pass in tighter quarters, we keep a strong grip on the leash and Jade’s attention can usually be redirected quickly.
We’ve been enjoying the sunny days and Jade has been cruising around the neighborhood. She is a welcome guest at the groomers, coffee shop, bakery, and neighborhood market. She enjoys dining al fresco, and is very well behaved if we decide to stop and have a drink or snack on an outdoor patio. She will also willingly stay in our yard for hours – sometimes we need to get the treats out to tempt her to come in. She loves to be outside.
Jade is an easy going lady who is ready to find her forever home. She is looking for someone who will keep her active in her golden years, relax on the couch and let her snuggle into you, and give her all the attention she deserves. She doesn’t mind if you need to leave her alone to go to work during the day – she won’t be destructive or have any accidents, and she will be so happy to see you when you get home! Jade does need to be your one and only pet, but she promises to be the only one you need!

Sweet girl Jadie has calmed down quite substantially after starting to feel at home. She has settled into our routine, and knows how to use her puppy dog eyes to get what she wants (usually… a ride to the park, a few rounds of fetch, some treats, or just to go outside and lay in the sun).
She is starting to show us some of the famous lab appetite, and she is instantly clearing her plate at breakfast and dinner. She loves to get special treats mixed in, like sardines, pumpkins, or eggs.
We had some visitors stay with us this week, and Jade lovingly welcomed them into our home. Everyone got lots of attention, and if you are relaxing on the couch, Jade will come sit next to you and put her head in your lap for pets. She is incredibly sweet and loving towards every human she meets. We have had a few contractors come out this week about some work we need done, and she was a very hospitable host to everyone.

She still has seemingly endless amounts of energy, and we spend some time in the yard playing fetch every day. Our freshly planted grass does not stand a chance against Jade!
Jade is getting better on a leash, and walks are quite enjoyable for everyone. We love to take Jade to a new neighborhood to explore and go on Sniff-ari. Jade did have a meet and greet with another dog, and she confirmed our suspicion that she is not dog friendly, and will do best as an only dog.
Jade also took a walk with my sister and her newborn. She enjoyed the walk – but as soon as the baby started making “squeaky toy noises,” Jade wanted to investigate a bit too thoroughly. We think Jade would do best in a home with no children under 5.
Foster mom started a new job, and Jade has spent a few hours unsupervised in the house each day, and she is doing great. She has been watching some nature TV shows and seems totally uninterested in the TV…. maybe we will try a rom-com next.

Jade is really starting to settle in and get comfortable here. Her first 2 days she was definitely very nervous… couldn’t get settled, with a bit of panting and pacing. Now, she is relaxed in the house and yard, and starting to know her way around town on the leash. She is still a grazer, but she is eating all of her food throughout the day.
She’s earned herself many nicknames in the past few days… Jadie Foster, Jader-tot, Jadakiss, Jada-lada-ding-dong, but mostly she is my Jadie girl.
This morning we took a nice long walk to the park, and played fetch in the large gated area. She is FAST and loved the opportunity to show off her speed.
We stopped by the coffee shop on the walk home, and Jade had the opportunity to meet some of her fans, who showered her with pets and compliments. When we got home, she took a nap to recover.
On her mid day walk, Jade met the neighborhood mail carrier, Steve, and got a treat! She may be in the dog minority – but she thinks mailmen are pretty cool. She actually thinks everyone is pretty cool, and loves to meet people.
We’ve officially found a toy that Jade cannot destroy – the Woof Pupsicle. She loves it and it keeps her busy for quite a while!
Jade is a great companion and she is along for the ride, wherever you want to go. She is so happy to be around people, and will make you feel very loved. She’s not a velcro dog, but she’s never far. I think she will become more independent as she continues to settle in.

Jade has had a very exciting 24 hours!
As promised, she took a trip to the pet shop for a bath and to pick out some toys. Jade was very well behaved in the bath, and even let us give her a nice blow dry. She is softer and more beautiful than we could have imagined!!

Jade picked out a toy for herself, which she promptly disassembled as soon as we got home. It seems like she understands boundaries and although she has a passion for destroying stuffed toys, she does not chew on anything else.
After a few rounds of fetch and a bedtime walk, she was finally ready to settle in and sleep. Jade got a good night of rest, and only woke us up to give us kisses once or twice.
We headed to the vet first thing in morning, and poor Jade has a double ear infection and an ear hematoma. We are treating her ears and she should be feeling better soon! We will head back to the vet for a recheck next week. She was very nervous at the vet but still her sweet self – they gave us some meds to help her relax for her recheck.
Jade got a pup cup as a treat for being such a good girl, and spent the whole drive home with her head out the window.
We arrived home to a package from her foster auntie that had a new toy inside! Jade kindly volunteered to destroy the intruder, and our home is once again safe from stuffed octopi.
Jade loves outside time and ball is life. One of her favorite indoor tricks is to roll the ball under the couch and make me fetch it for her. She is a sucker for attention and never gets tired of playing and affection.

Yesterday we brought home Jade, a beautiful 9 year old chocolate lab. Jade is in great shape, and clearly came from a very loving home.Â
Jade is a little anxious being in a new place, but she is curious, excited, and so so sweet. She got in and out of the car with no problem and was an angel on the ride home (partially thanks to a new ball she was playing with). She has explored and sniffed every inch of the house from the basement to the attic – she handles the stairs well and isn’t scared of anything.
We spent some time playing fetch in the yard, have gone on several walks to explore the neighborhood, and have eaten lots of treats. She’s a little picky with her food… but very indiscriminate towards treats!

She loves balls and it seems like she would play fetch for hours. Foster mom had a bunch of tennis balls, and Jade really went wild.
She is great on a leash, barely pulling at all. She notices the squirrels, cats, birds, and dogs in the neighborhood, but doesn’t lunge or bark. She does make sure she goes up to every person she sees to ask for a pet!
Jade seems very excited for her afternoon – we have a trip to the pet store for a bath and some new toys planned! Tomorrow, we will head to the vet for a check up to make sure this girl is in tip top shape to find a new home.
