Lady #9 Black Labrador Retriever Mix Female 7 Years Old ID#3238
Meet Lady! She is a 7 year old black Labrador mix that was dropped off at a shelter in Mississippi along with her puppies. Unfortunately, all but one of Lady’s puppies succumbed to Parvovirus but lucky puppy Lucy survived. Through the help of a wonderful Brookline volunteer, Lady and Lucy were transported North to Brookline foster homes. Please ready Lady’s blog from the bottom up to learn more about her.

Lady has embraced her inner lap dog! She has been regularly crawled up with us for snuggles. She still enjoys some alone time, but it’s been so nice to her her tail thumping happily to ask for some extra attention.Lady continues to be laid back and relaxed. She has been no trouble to keep calm during her exercise restrictions, but I can’t wait until we can let her get unleash her zoomies on some tennis balls. She has mastered the down verbal command (even without a treat) so we’re working on paw next. She also enjoyed trying out a treat puzzle and she is getting quite good at solving them.

Lady is feeling much better. A week has passed from her first injection. She enjoyed meeting all the trick or treaters on Halloween and was a big hit with children large and small. She is so gentle and friendly!
Lady is gaining weight nicely. She was 53lbs and is up to 57lbs. The vet thinks around 60 will be perfect. She coat looking gorgeous, shiny and black. Lady tried out being a lap dog this week! Usually she will just put her head on you, but she decided to try to fit her whole body. Sometimes a girl just needs a hug!

Lovely Lady had her first heartworm treatment injection yesterday. It was hard to see her in pain, but she is feeling much better this morning. Lady is still her wonderful loving self despite not feeling well. We know it will be worth it at the end!
Here is Lady showing off her ball catching skills over the weekend.

Lady continues to be an exceptional dog. She is the perfect mix of calm, affectionate and brainy. This past week she started asking for belly rubs which is so sweet. We’re glad she is feeling comfortable here. Lady is enjoying the warm fall weather and has started rolling around on the grass in happiness. I’m going to need to grab a video of it since it’s quite funny when she does.Lady began showing interest in tennis balls and snuggling on the couch this week. Since she’s on limited exercise due to heartworm, we’ve been using the ball as a reward for practicing commands instead of playing fetch. We’ll put her into a sit then toss the ball for her to catch in her mouth. After just a week of practicing she can consistently make the catch! We’re also working on the down command, which is coming along nicely. Can’t wait to show off her tricks!Lady received her Brookline goodie box this week! We are very appreciative of the generous welcome gift for her, especially the handmade toys. We earlier receivee a box of puzzle toys to keep her mind busy during her treatment. Lady was nice enough to let her foster sister steal the stuffies – Lady didn’t mind as long as she got to keep the tennis balls and snacks! Both dogs have snuffle mats and have been “snuffling” together as an end-of-day treat. The house has been busy with repairman this week as well. Lady has been warm and welcomed everyone. She doesn’t bark or jump and has been calmly asking for pets while doing leashed introductions. Yesterday she even snuck off to get some extra pets from her favorite repairman – this girl is so friendly!
Finally, Lady has her first injection to treat her heartworm next week. We’ll update with how it goes. Please send some Brookline mojo that she tolerates it well and doesn’t have any adverse reactions.

Lady continues to blossom. She is such a wonderful companion! She has been enjoying time outside with the family on these crisp fall days. She almost never barks – maybe a single bark when she goes in the crate just to double check that she really has to go to bed. I haven’t heard her bark at a single thing in the house or yard, despite all the foot traffic on the walking path next to our house. She’s enjoying meeting dogs and people through the fence. She is trustworthy with her behavior and house training and has full run of the house. She has stopped trying to eat our dog’s food and never picks up anything she’s not supposed to. She feels free to wander off when I’m working from home to find the most comfortable dog bed. Her recall in the yard is excellent as well and we’re planning to start working on commands beyond sit next. We’re going to keep using the crate at night and when we’re out because of her upcoming exercise restrictions due to her heartworm treatment. The next stages of her treatment are scheduled for the end of October and beginning of November.Lady is a true gem of a girl, and we are so happy to be preparing her for her forever family!

Two Milestones for Lady – her first day on her own while both her foster parents were at work! Lady spent Wednesday peaceful in her crate but she was thrilled to get out when we got home. Lucky for her we work from home most of the time, but she handled the day on her own just fine.Next Lady visited the vet today. She did NOT enjoy the car ride and really wished for a cuddle buddy in the backseat, but she survived. She charmed everyone at the vet with her sweet personality. Lady weighs 53lbs. The vet said she should put on some more weight. Lady was very happy to get a prescription for more yummy food! Next we’ll be getting her ready for heartworm treatment, hopefully to begin next month.Lady enjoys sunning herself in the yard and showed interest in tennis balls. She hasn’t been interested in playing with her foster sister or trying to chase any animals in the yard. Lady would rather get scratches and pets than play right now. She is starting to prance when she gets excited which is fun to see. She also gives the best hugs where she’ll put her upper body on your lap and try to wrap her paws around you.Lady continues to live up to her name. She is an amazing companion!

Lady had another peaceful night. We tried using the crate downstairs and she was perfectly fine. She gets a special treat when she goes in the crate so she has some incentive!
More of her sunny personality is beginning to coming out. She is a real wiggle-butt when she greets you! I’ve been brushing her and she loves being brushed.
Lady is a quiet work from home companion. We haven’t heard any other barks, just a few tiny snores when napping. She enjoys affection and proximity to people but isn’t clingy.
Lady was very disappointed today when I tried to reward her with a baby carrot 👎 the look on her face was pure disappoint (see photo.). She keeps hoping for some people food but isn’t pushy about it. I did invest in a slow feeder for her to help her with gulping down her food.
Tile and wood floors as a bit slippery for her but she manages. She’s a bit hesitant to enter a new room alone but has no problem following me. I’ve been keeping her teathered to me, and she’s very easy on the lead.
Will update with more on Lady’s adventures and her baseline vet visit later this week! She is such a sweet, placid girl.

Lovely Lady has been with us a full day and she is truly a gem! This sweet, trusting girl was very tired from her long journey from Mississippi to New Jersey. She was easy to move from the transport van to the Jeep and needed just a small boost. Lady was a wonderful passenger – very calm. When we arrived home, the first task was getting her cleaned up. She tolerated her bath well. She has a beautiful glossy black coat with a few white speckles – I can’t wait to see how her coat improves. She will be stunning. Lady spent most of her time napping and getting pets. She loves attention and seeks out affection, as well nudges you to keep going if you stop! A few hours later, she met foster dad and 10 year old human foster brother. She was slightly intimidated by these two tall guys, but once they stopped down to her level she was eager for pets.Lady has done all of her business outside so far. She slept soundly all night in the living room with foster mom on the couch. We have the crate available and sometimes she goes in to rest but prefers the dog bed near where the family congregates.
Lady ignores the pet rabbit. She gets along with her cockapoo foster sister but doesn’t understand why Zuzu barks so much! We’ve only heard Lady bark once. She has a healthy appetite. She does know a few commands like sit, come, and no. I believe she was was once a loved pet, and will be again soon! She goes to the vet this week to be evaluated for her heartworm treatment. Looking forward to getting this beautiful girl on the road to health and a new beginning!
