Maggie #19 Yellow Labrador Retriever Female 8 Years Old ID #3650

Meet Maggie! This sweet girl is a former breeder momma that is ready to start her new life in a home. Maggie is good with all people, other dogs, and cats. She spent time around many children on the farm as well. Please read starting from the bottom to follow Maggie’s journey in her foster home.

Maggie says “Hi, I’ll be available soon. I wanna come roll in the dandelions in your yard.”

Yellow Lab

In the past week Maggie has learned how to do full flights of stairs. There may have been a time or two where she snuck down to the basement while the door accidentally left open. She a pro now! She has also mastered the car, jumps right in, though she prefers to get in on the floor and then hop onto the seat. Maggie has met a bunch of dogs while in foster care and loved them all. Possibly loved the fur grandson a bit too much 🙂 He was a good sport about it (and he’s neutered.) Which brings us to the other news, Maggie is in heat. Therefore, she will be adopted with a sterilization contract. You can find information on that here: https://brooklinelabrescue.org/adopt/adoption-policies-fees/

Maggie also wanted to show off some of her new friends. She’s especially comfortable around her twin, Yellow’s unite (Maggie in the back)! And then there’s the whole group patiently waiting for nightly toothbrushes.

Maggie has now been with us for one week. She is slowly coming out of her shell and showing her personality. We always love this period where you can almost see each thought they’re having and how they respond. Here’s what we’ve learned from Maggie so far.

She is very curious and is always checking out new areas. This might be poking her nose in random baskets or revisiting every corner. She likes to just ‘check everything out’. However, she has not bothered any non-dog things. Her curiosity will take her anywhere, and since she’s not gotten a handle on her name or ‘come’ yet, she will either need a fenced in area or an owner with the patience to walk wherever she wants to sniff. But, bonus, she walks very well on leash. FM is definitely getting her steps these days.

Maggie seems to enjoy kids, even little littles. Again, she’s very curious, and wanted to play sink with the 3yr old. She knows how to chill and is slowly learning that dog beds are softer than cement. She also takes a lot of comfort from her furry friends. She will do best in a home with another (or more) confident, fur sibling to make her feel comfortable and be her best self.

Lately FM has had to go into work and Maggie has successfully rested in her crate for the whole workday with the resident dogs right nearby. She also sleeps in her crate at night without an issue. She is also doing all of her business outside and has been eating well.

Maggie had a big day yesterday. She will now get into and out of the car on her own. She is a little nervous (panting and walking from one window to the other) at first, but does calm down and eventually will lay down and rest. Her ride to the vet is an hour and she did well. She is all utd on vaccines and the vet only had nice things to say. We are now waiting for her spay on May 5th.  After the vet visit, we went to another BLRR volunteers’ home to see how Maggie would do with a much younger dog (less than a year.) The younger dog really wanted to play and hasn’t had a ton of experience in how to engage (or not) other dogs. To sum it up, Maggie got a gold star for patience. She’ll likely do best with dogs of her same ….ah, energy level.

Maggie’s cutest thing lately has been that when FM gets home, she’ll do a little trot, bunny hop until she gets the pets she wants. That’s all for now as we keep learning about Maggie. Come back soon for updates on Maggie.

It’s been only one day and Maggie is still settling in to her foster home but has already shown that she’s very good on a leash and loves her people. She’s always looking up to be sure her person is there and that she’s doing okay. Maggie has already met the two cats and reinforced the fact that she’s cat friendly. She’s also learning to relax and hang out with her new fur friends.
