Megan #3 Chocolate Labrador Retriever Female 6 Years Old #3696
Meet Megan! This big beautiful hunk of chocolate was surrendered by her owner as the farmer has decided to stop breeding! She is very sweet and loves her people. Megan is overweight and will need to loose some pounds while in foster care. Read Megan’s blog from the bottom up to follow her journey from farm Mama to a pampered pet.

Megan can be challenging. The transition from the farm has been very difficult for her.
She is making progress, but it is very slow. She is very fearful, and afraid of the outside world. She will go outside to do her business, but only doing it in the woods next to the house, (usually twice a day), and then hurries back inside. She stress pees if we try to get her out more frequently. She also stress pees at loud noises, and unexpected events.
We are working on getting her to go for walks in order to help with her weight loss, but getting her outside is difficult. She will go into the yard with the other two dogs to be brushed, but she frequently runs back to the door and sits on the step. The house is her safe space.
Megan wants to be in charge of our resident dogs, though she has yielded to Cassie. She has been pushy towards Sophie a few times, yet most of the time they are fine. (Sophie has yielded). She also can be very stubborn. When she says no, she plants herself and has a look in her eye that I interpret as a challenge. Since she weighs about 100 pounds, there’s not much we can do about it.
We’re working on the weight loss – she will get weighed next week when she gets her vaccine boosters, but she does look better to us already. On the positive side, she likes car rides and willingly follows the other two dogs when she understands that a car ride is coming.
Megan is very sweet and loving, and wants to please. She has decided that FM is her person, and wants to know where FM is at all times, whining if FM is out of sight for more than a few minutes. We think that she is also very smart. She has quickly learned the routine of the house and seems fine as long as we don’t deviate from that. She ignores the cats.
Overall, Megan has the potential to become a great house dog. It will just take time and patience.

Miss Megan is slowly overcoming her shyness. She is still uncomfortable in the yard, but will now come out with the resident dogs and enjoys being groomed out there. She still needs to be hand fed a few bits of kibble before she will eat on her own, but has moved from eating in her safe place to eating in the kitchen.
She will let us know when she needs to do her business, though she still has to go into the woods.
Today was a big step for Megan – she went for a ride in the back of my car with the other two dogs, and seemed to enjoy it. Getting her into the car was a bit challenging, but we’re hoping that she will soon use the steps that Cassie uses.
Megan is very loving and sweet, and as she relaxes, we see more and more of her happy self.

Megan joined us on Wednesday May 27, after a Rescue Ride with Deb and Jackie. After a bit of a struggle getting her into our car, (she’s a bit voluptuous, as Jackie says) we arrived home and she met our resident dogs Sophie and Cassie (a Brookline Alum). Megan was understandably very nervous, but greeted us all sweetly before settling.
She was a bit reluctant to eat that first night, but did manage a small meal, hand fed. Megan pretty much ignored the cats, just looking at them, but no real interest in interacting. She did well overnight – no accidents, and did some musical beds with the other dogs, who treated her like one of the pack right away.
Getting her to do her business has been a challenge. She will not potty in the yard though she can see the other 2 dogs pottying there. We eventually discovered that she will only do her toileting in the small patch of woods next to our house. (I have been spraying the Poison Ivy rather desperately since she chose that area, lol.) She is learning to ask when she has to go, which is a big deal for her because she is very shy, though she is getting more brave every day, even starting to wander around the house on her own today.Megan loves to snuggle, and asks for pets whenever anyone comes near her. She is a sweet and loving girl, and we look forward to helping her find herself.
