black labrador retriever mixMeet Molly! Ten year old Molly’s life has not always been the easiest, as she was part of a cruelty investigation, along with 3 other dogs.  But you would never know it, as this sweet girl loves everyone she meets! Please read Molly’s blog from the bottom up to learn more about her while in foster care.

Just about three weeks with Molly, and she continues to be such a good girl! This sweet senior pup has gotten more comfortable each day, and she’s a lovable couch potato in the house. Currently, Molly’s routine looks like:

Wake up with Foster Dad around 7:30 AM (though she’d be fine sleeping in a little later) for a quick potty break out back while he gets the coffee going. Then they take a mile walk. Molly tends to let out a couple, “HELLO WORLD!” barks when she goes out the front door. If there are people on the street, it’s in their direction. Then, she doesn’t really bark the rest of the walk.Black Labrador Retriever Mix

She’s more energetic in the morning than the evening, and will eagerly pull towards squirrels. She’s easily redirected with either some kissing sounds or having her sit and refocus.

Molly is fine to walk past other dogs on the sidewalk!

She’ll usually do her business on this walk and tires somewhat quickly due to the summer heat and humidity. We believe once it cools down, she’d love to go on longer, sniff-filled walks and hikes.

Molly is not a dog whose internal clock demands meals at a certain time. We think she’d prefer to graze throughout the day, and preferably on a paper plate or soft surface like a snuffle mat. But we put food out for her in the morning.

Between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM, Molly’s happy to snooze! She’ll either sleep next to one of us while we WFH, or sleep on the living room couch on her own. Throughout the day, noises outside make her pop up, but she almost never barks–even when someone knocks on the door (a rarity in the dog world!)Black Labrador Retriever Mix

I let her out for a potty break around 1:00 PM, but she could probably go either way on this.

I WFH, but we’ve also now left her for a full work day when I have meetings in the city, and she is great, uncrated. Never gets into anything! We gate areas off for the cats in case they need it, but they continue to coexist quite peacefully.

We have our one-mile evening walk around 5:30 PM, and she does her business again. We offer dinner when we get home, but she usually doesn’t eat until about 7:00 or 8:00 PM.Black Labrador Retriever Mix

We don’t give Molly human food, and she knows to not ask for it 🙂

In the evening, we’ll offer the backyard for final bathroom breaks, and otherwise hang out at home. We have a little play session with the tug rope that she loves. Then everyone heads to bed around 10:00 PM. She LOVES to be wrapped up in blankets, and I hope her new family wants a cuddle bug near them all the time!Black Labrador Retriever Mix

It’s possible that Molly is actually the perfect dog.Labrador Retriever Mix

We’ve taken to calling her Miss Molly Moo, or “Moo” for short, and she has just settled in so beautifully over the last week and change. First and foremost, we’re so pleased to share that Molly is a DREAM with our two cats. We think she’d be just fine in a household with feline friends. However, our cats are dog-savvy, and lived with a grouchy adult dog for 5 years, so they knew how to give a wide berth. Our spicier cat Rosie loves dogs, and Molly is fine to let her hang out nearby.Labrador Retriever Mix

On Friday, we had a few last-minute overnight visitors, and Molly was wonderful! She has zero problems with door knocks and bells, and while she did bark maybe a dozen times when everyone entered, she then settled quickly and wanted to receive pets. We had adult male and female visitors, and she was comfortable with all. She then happily sought attention from everyone the rest of the evening!Labrador Retriever Mix

On Saturday, we returned from a walk and as we were going into our house, an off leash small dog bolted towards Molly. We blocked the strange dog with our bodies, but to our surprise, Molly had absolutely no reaction.

We’re still working on leash skills; Molly can pull and zig zag for the first 10 minutes of walking, just because she’s so excited and wants to check everything out. She is also keenly interested in squirrels and will pull towards them. I don’t think she’d know what to do if she got up to one, it seems like she just wants to see what they are.Labrador Retriever Mix

Molly is a bit picky about food, and this may just be her continuing to settle in with us. She doesn’t like to eat out of a metal bowl (or any bowl?) and prefers to eat off of a soft surface, such as her bed or a mat. Dogs and their quirks!Labrador Retriever Mix

She’s also good with setting her own boundaries. She doesn’t love her inner ears or paws touched, and will let you know by simply getting up and moving away.

She is 100% house trained; we continue to encourage potty both in our small fenced backyard and out on walks, so she knows how to do both. This sleepy senior is a great WFH companion, but she’s happy to be independent, too! While she likes to know where everyone is, she also has no issue taking herself to bed in another room.Labrador Retriever Mix

The other day, we both had to leave the house for a few hours, so it was a good test run. I left her uncrated, since she’s so chill. She did bark about 5-6 times when we left, but then settled with a lick mat and the room was pristine. No destruction!

Molly is such a good girl and will fit into a bunch of different lifestyles so well. We really can’t believe she’s 10, and genuinely believe someone could be happy with her for years to come!

Molly LOVES her foster dad! We both took a day off for her arrival on Friday, so today was the first time she really experienced him leaving the house. She gave a couple barks as if to say, “where did he goooo??,” then moped by the door.Labrador Retriever Mix

Foster mom is an okay second, and Molly will gladly snooze wherever there’s cool air. This girlie definitely runs a little hot, so it’s been shorter walks and lots of ice cube treats. That didn’t stop her from basking in the sun, though! Just had to rub off some of that clean bath scent from yesterday…Labrador Retriever Mix

We continue to be charmed by Molly. She takes treats VERY gently, is quite smart, and is decidedly not scared of a vacuum. When she doesn’t like something, she’ll remove herself quietly. She’s redirected very easily, which comes in handy on walks and all the sounds that come from living in a rowhome. We’re working on walking in a straight line, but again, it’s all new! It seems like the newness makes her a little nervous and shy, but a, “it’s okay, Molly” snaps right back.Labrador Retriever Mix

As we come to a close on Molly’s third day, we know this senior gal is still adjusting. She’s being a little picky about food, going to the bathroom (though perfectly housebroken!), and receiving attention from passerby. But she was sure thrilled about her new crinkly toy! And she continues to seek out and soak up all the love. She’s a very good girl.Labrador Retriever Mix

Miss Molly had a great first full day with her new foster family! It was a lazy Sunday, and she mostly hung out with foster dad on the couch. She’s an expert snuggler (though we’ve discovered she’s quite the snorer)!Black Labrador Retriever Mix

Molly’s leash skills continue to improve, and she’s gotten the hang of relieving herself during walks. She still appreciates the chance to use the bathroom in our fenced backyard, and we’ll encourage her to utilize both options. Molly notes the squirrels and other dogs on walks, but isn’t fazed. Our nice neighbor gives cookies to all the walking dogs, and she offered one this morning. Despite Molly’s treat motivation, she was feeling bashful, and politely declined. She’s still decompressing, and that’s okay!Black Labrador Retriever Mix

We were so impressed by Molly’s tolerance for a bath today! She was certainly nervous getting in and wasn’t a huge fan of getting wet, but a peanut butter licky mat made everything okay.

After her bath, Molly had some mild zoomies and played tug with foster dad for a bit before tuckering out. She’s now back to the couch snoozing between us. This girl is so sweet!

Molly was sprung from the shelter today! It’s hard to believe she’s been through so much in her 10 years, as she was immediately a trusting lovebug.

She did great in the car, and moved around only to get a better look out the window and sniff the air. About an hour later, we arrived at her new digs in East Falls, a tree-lined, quiet neighborhood of northwest Philadelphia. We can’t wait to take Molly out on some trails in the nearby Wissahickon, but until then, we’re warming up with several quick walks around the neighborhood to get a sense of her leash skills.

Just from today, she doesn’t know how to pee on a leash, but did go #2 which is great! She seemed a little nervous about the amount of cars, people, and dogs in the distance (we kept crossing the street to avoid interactions for now), and the influx of noises. This is a pretty quiet neighborhood, but still very different from her Bucks County home of the last year!

  • We can already tell Molly is going to be a great addition to someone’s lucky family:
  • She’s easy to redirect on the leash; we did about 1.5 miles today and she was a very good girl!
  • The second her crate was set up, she knew to hop in and lay down without prompting
  • She very much wanted human food, but did NOT beg–just kind of gazed with purpose
  • She’s nicely housebroken, and used our backyard like a champ. She also knew to quietly grumble to go out, and seemed to respond strongly to, “need to go potty?”

Best of all, she just craves love and affection. Her tail’s constantly wagging, and she’ll flop down for scratches. She’s currently snoring away between us on the couch; her head pressed against me.

We can’t wait to learn more about this good girl and to integrate her with our two resident cats. More to come!

Sweet 10 yo Molly has been waiting for to be sprung from the shelter but no one has come to her rescue yet!  She was in limbo at the shelter for 10 months while she waited for her court case to be completed.  Now Molly has been waiting for a foster or a foster to adopt since May without any luck.black labrador retriever mixThis girl is a shelter favorite and just loves to be loved.  She just can’t get enough scratches.

Molly has a lot of tricks that she can perform and shows that she is willing to do anything for a yummy treat. She loves to go for walks and entertains herself well with chews and stuffed Kongs.black labrador retriever mixAll Molly needs is that one person to give her a chance to happily live out her golden years and she will reward you with lots of licks and cuddles.black labrador retriever mix black labrador retriever mixPlease reach out to info@brooklinelabrescue.org if you are interested in helping Molly and would like information about meeting her prior to making a foster commitment.

Black Labrador RetrieverMolly loves to take walks, learn new tricks and be doted on.  She has quite a repertoire of commands she’ll gladly demonstrate – play bow, sit up, slide into a down – she can do it all!  Black Labrador Retriever Black Labrador Retriever Black Labrador RetrieverShe is very treat motivated, and wants to please, so easy to train.  She loves chewing on bones and stuffed kongs.  And there’s nothing like a good nap on a soft bed afterwards.black labrador retriever mix black labrador retriever mixOne of her favorites is “give a curtsy.” She will happily do any trick you’d like for treats!

Molly is incredibly easy and loving.  She would love to spend her golden years being the center of someone’s world.  She’s in excellent health, though she could shed a few pounds, and has a beautiful coat (and really nice teeth!).  She will be happy to curl into you for loving, and is happiest spending time with her people.  She is the perfect blend of loving some exercise, then being able to chill. Black Labrador RetrieverMolly has that sweet, tail wagging personality that is typical of Labs. She does the “lab lean” well and just folds into you for love and pats.  She would happily be a lap dog if given the chance. She’s hoping to find her forever home soon! Black Labrador RetrieverMolly deserves to find a wonderful home where she is loved and pampered after years of neglect.  She will reward you with unconditional love!Black Labrador Retriever
