Otis #3 Yellow Labrador Retriever Male 8 Years Old ID#3658
Meet Otis! Otis is a sweet, handsome, and energetic 8 years young purebred Labrador. His owner recently passed away and he was staying in a family member’s basement until they reached out to Brookline for some help rehoming him. He was crated during the day and at night but was allowed free roam of the basement when they were home. He is in need of leash training and some good doggie manners.
Otis is currently looking for a foster home with a fenced yard and where his people would be home more often than not. For more information, please contact info@brooklinelabrescue.org Also, please read his blog from the bottom up to learn more about him!

Otis is recovering from his neutering so we are taking it easy with him. We have gone on walks the past few days. He is doing so well and I see so much improvement woth sit and loose lead walking. He is also beginning to sit when I stop.
We are also working on snuggles. I am really trying to connect with Otis. I put my arms around his neck and give him kisses. He starting to relax and enjoy the affection. It is wonderful to see all progress he is making.
We are hoping to transition Otis to a foster home soon. It would allow Otis to live in a home again and to connect with more people. He was a bit aloof when he first came to BCK. It’s understandable he lived with his dad for 8 years. When his dad died Otis was probably confused. He got shuffled to a relative. They didn’t want a dog. He ended up living in the basement. Then he came to Brookline. Otis needed manners. Now he has some manners. The foster can continue to work with Otis. He is a very sweet guy. We are working on taking treats nicely. He is a bit of a shark when he grabs the treat. He also is learning stand from a sit. I am really proud of this boy.

I am beginning to make some progress getting Otis to sit, yay! I started by having him sit on one of these giant cable spools. It took a bit but we got him to sit.
We repeated it a number of times. Eventually we were able to transition to the floor.
We went for a walk today and I made him sit a few times. He is getting the hang of it. It isn’t his fault no one ever worked with him. All of this is new for him. He is also beginning to connect with me and the staff. Before he would wander around and just sniff. Now he is asking for attention from the staff. He just started to check in with me on our walks. Just a few times but it’s a start. He had a stuffy the other day. He is starting to decompress. It makes me happy to see him relax a little.
Otis has a ways to go. He has improved on his recalls. He is still a work in progress on his walks. He pulls like a champ. Again he probably never went for a walk on a leash. A couple of times my shoe came untied. Otis sat or stood right next to me. He didn’t try to pull. He just patiently waited. It really is exciting to see the sudden change.
Tomorrow Otis will be neutered. I will give him a break from training until next week. I am really looking forward to seeing if he starts to get more focused.

Otis arrived at BCK on December 22nd right before our rescue break started. He is settling in.
Otis arrived with a lickoma on his right wrist area. We got some medicine and it seems to healing nicely.Otis is a very good car passenger. I teether him in the back and he usually stands for a short ride. We have been working on loose lead walking, recalls and sit. I would say he is a work in progress. He doesn’t seem to want to sit. I am taking my time doing short sessions. It’s slow progress. I think part of that may be he is still intact. He isn’t really focused. I am hoping once he is neutered things will improve.
He loves to jump and put his paws on you. I am trying to break that habit. I think is former owner allowed him to do that maybe as a greeting. Otis seems to have never learned any obedience commands. I have faith in him that he will eventually learn. Patience and time.He is very sweet and friendly. He is not reactive to other dogs. He is curious but no barking.
Otis will be neutered on January 7th. I usually give dogs a week to heal and will begin training again. I am looking forward to working with Otis in the New Year.

I picked up owner surrender Otis today and took him to BCK. Deb met me there to get Otis settled and to see what she needs to work on with him.
Otis is an 8-year-old, Yellow Male, he is intact, but he should get neutered while he is at BCK. He is UTD on all vaccines and has tested negative for heartworm.
I got Otis from the niece of Otis’s deceased owner. She was the only one that would take him in! She did her best with Otis for the 3-4 weeks she had him, but she is not a dog person, and Otis needs lots of exercise and needs to learn obedience. Otis was was living in the basement, leashed to one of the support beams on a 10′ lead or in a crate most of the time.
Otis just needs a chance to run and learn… and that is where Deb comes in at BCK, she will work with Otis on leash behavior and good doggie manners. Let’s just say that if Santa is short some Reindeer in a few days, Otis could probably pull the whole sleigh, LOL!
Once some bumps are smoothed out Otis will be looking for a foster home so stay tuned and get your application in if you are interested in fostering this handsome boy!
