It’s been a bit since Pearl‘s last update. She’s still the sweetest girl with the most beautiful, shiny black coat. She has come so far and will now tackle any set of steps you put in front of her. She has gained our trust and now has free roam with the residents dog when her people have to be out of the house. Pearl has shown us over the last few weeks that she not only enjoys having the dogs around but she really needs their confidence to help her along the path to being her best self.Pearl has met and spent time with three other dogs in addition to her resident foster sisters. After a slow, controlled intro they were all fast friends. She has turned into a dog’s dog. We have noticed that sometimes she can be afraid when meeting certain people, typically of the male gender, but not all men. She likes to get to know new people at her own pace and in her own way. She is looking for a family willing to give her this time and patience. These sweet breeder girls are the most complex, yet amazing, dogs. They often come from horrible situations where they know nothing of love and caring. Yet they find it in their hearts to give us humans another chance. Are you the person willing to find it in your heart to give Pearl the chance she needs?

Pearl has been off the farm for one month. What a difference some time can make. She’s a pro (albeit not graceful) at nearly all steps and has learned to settle quite well in the crate when FM has to go to work (about 6 hrs). The resident dogs are nearby on free roam during this time. She still likes to take her time getting to meet new people, but she takes it all in stride. We’ve been concentrating on learning her tolerance for other dogs, both seeing from a far and meeting them. She has shown no reaction to passing by dogs from a distance. When meeting a new dog, she prefers to do it on her schedule, and is fine with just chilling from a short distance away. This is evident in the photos at Muddy Paws w/ Yeti (the dog). FM often has to get close to a new person or dog, before Pearl will approach them. She also met two new dogs that she had time to hang out with. Both times she needed about 15-20 minutes to warm up and be comfortable. Her reaction wasn’t aggressive or even reactive, but more like she was afraid of them. After a bit of walking and sniffing, everything was fine. The one dog, gigantic black shaggy in the photos, is my daughter’s Shepadoodle. He’s non-reactive and mostly calm, leaving Pearl alone. They have coexisted all weekend with only an occasional grumble if Ace tried to give FM too much attention. Pearl has even taken to following him around outside to see how to ‘dog’ properly. She’s done very well. Good girl Pearl!
Also this past week Pearl was spayed and had a small lipoma removed from her nipple. Her paws are all healed, she had a negative parasite screening, and her skin/fur is filling in nicely. With all that said, she’ll soon be looking for her forever home. Pearl will do best in a family with older children that understand that dogs can sometimes need space, as she can still be nervous around small kids. She would like a dog to share her time with, if it’s a calm, non-reactive dog. However, she would also be okay as an only dog, if someone could be around more often than not. She doesn’t need a fenced in yard and enjoys leisurely walks. Does Pearl sound like the dog for your family?

Miss Pearl has been with us nearly two weeks now and is loving life off the farm. She is discovering how to do new things every day and you can almost see her feeling better as she is getting healthy. We’re pleased to say that her paws are almost completely healed, and she’s thrilled to not have to wear a boot anymore. Pearl seems to have settled into our routine quite well, including chilling in the crate for about six hours on the days that FM has to go to work. She only barks for just a few minutes before settling down to rest. When FM gets to work from home, Pearl prefers to rest on the couch. During the night, Pearl prefers to just sleep on the floor next to FM’s side of the bed on blanket. She will get up and follow FM if she gets up, but then she’ll lay right back down. Pearl has done all her business outside as well. Yay Pearl.Pearl hasn’t really shown any interest in toys or bones as of yet, but she was interested in her goody box she got from Brookline today. She’s sporting a little minion action too.
Pearl has started to try to play with resident dog Bella, but they haven’t gotten too crazy yet. And the big yella dog, Sadie, tends to be the fun police if she suspects there’s fun going on.
Pearl had many firsts over the past couple of days. She will now go up and down a full flight of stairs as if she’s always done it. She had reinforcements as she was just starting out, one step at a time. Things are always easier when friends help. Then just last night, she willingly climbed into the car on her own after an evening at the local pub where she was the hit of the night. She just chilled on the floor listening, even when there was rather loud music playing. You can see in the one pic if you zoom a bit, that while we were at an outside seating area, she was 20ft or so from a cat. She just watched it curiously. She has also had a few positive encounters with our two resident outside cats, but we’re not getting too close just yet. She’s such a sweetheart that loves pets and enjoys laying on the couch with her people.

Meet Pearl. Pearl is an almost 6yo (her birthday is in December!) black Labrador. She was sprung from the farm where she was in a concrete kennel nearly all day every day.Due to that she has some scrapes and tears on her paw pads and a couple minor hot spots we’re watching. This must be causing her some pain, as she limps and sometimes hops (avoiding that paw). We’ve been limiting our walks and attempting to stick to the grass. We hope after her vet visit at the end of this week, we’ll get some meds to aid in her healing so she can start to be more active.Other than that, she is a complete doll. She LOVES her people. She walks like a dream on the leash, sometimes even behind us. Of course, she’s nursing a paw so that may change. She has been eating well, and we’re hoping to add a couple pounds to her. She’s adapting to living in a home for the first time at a pretty normal pace for a farm girl. She’s mastered all the doors and a few steps, We’ll hold off on a full flight til she’s healed up.She got to meet and hangout with my 19 month old granddaughter today. She did great, some heavy sniffing at first, but then she was not phased. Stay tuned for more on the black beauty, Pearl.
