Poppy #3 Black Labrador Retriever Female 6 Months Old #3560

Black Labrador RetrieverMeet Poppy!  Poppy was found wandering around with her 2 siblings on a farm. They were taken in by this caring finder who contacted Brookline after they were unable to locate the puppies owners. She is estimated to be about 6 months old.  Please read Poppy’s blog from the bottom up to learn more about her while in foster care.

🍁🐾

Poppy had a fun-filled weekend playing in the leaves and running around with our granddaughter—ears flapping in the wind and tail going a mile a minute!Black Labrador RetrieverWe took her on several walks each day, and she’s really starting to understand the joy of a good stroll and all the wonderful sniffs that come with it.Black Labrador RetrieverShe’s also made big strides with the neighbor’s dogs. Instead of sprinting back to the house when they bark their hellos, she now stays put and even offers a few brave barks back. It’s a big step for our little lady.Black Labrador RetrieverWe’ve begun using the crate for her daytime naps so she can associate it with a calm, restful space.

This weekend, we left Poppy in her crate for about an hour and a half while we were out—and kept an eye on her through the camera. She was quiet and snoozing the whole time, right up until she heard us come home. Then she popped up and happily joined our two dogs in welcoming us back.

With time, love, and consistency, we know she’ll continue to grow more comfortable with us coming and going—and we’re confident this progress will follow her into her forever home.Black Labrador RetrieverSweet Poppy is truly blooming, and she’s well on her way to becoming the most adorable, loving family member for whoever is lucky enough to welcome her into their life.

🐾 Poppy  – Growing Confidence and Finding Her Voice

Poppy had another good couple of nights, sleeping soundly in her crate next to our bed. She only whined a couple of times before settling right back down.

In the house, she’s full of confidence now—often wandering off on her own to explore and proudly returning with some random “treasure” to show us.Black Labrador RetrieverOutside, Poppy is still a bit cautious. Our dogs and the neighbors’ dogs like to fence-play, and that was a little too much excitement for her, so she darted back inside.

Poppy  just needs more gentle exposure to new experiences and noises so she can learn that the world is safe and fun.Black Labrador RetrieverYesterday brought two “firsts” that made us laugh:

Poppy barked for the first time and immediately jumped in surprise at the sound of her own voice!Black Labrador RetrieverThen, later in the day, she decided to help herself to my lunch and swiped a sandwich right off the kitchen table while I turned to grab my tea. The look on her face afterward was priceless—maybe she was sorry… or just sorry she got caught!

Every day, Poppy shows us a little more of her curious, funny, and loving personality.Black Labrador RetrieverPoppy is gaining confidence and gradually learning house manners that will set her up for success in her forever home.

Day #2

Poppy had a fun Sunday watching football and playing outside.Black Labrador RetrieverShe’s starting to interact more with our two pups—especially Frankie, who is now the lucky recipient of endless kisses! Maybe she’s just realized he’s a boy! 💋🐾

Poppy continues to do great with her house training—she has had no accidents at all since she arrived.

She either waits to be let out, or stands by the door to the deck to let us know she needs to go.

Poppy slept through the night again in a her crate next to our bed and settled very quickly after just a little whining and some gentle reassurance that we were there.

She’s such a good girl and continues to amaze us with how easily she’s adjusting to her new routine. ❤️🐾Black Labrador RetrieverDay Three: brought a few fun puppy antics — digging in the water bowl and stealing towels while we tried to wipe up the mess! 💦🐶 She’s starting to show more of her playful personality now that she’s feeling comfortable.

We’ve also started leash training with short walks around the neighborhood. She’s already doing so much better than on day one — when we had to resort to the shopping cart!

Poppy is such a sweet, smart girl who learns quickly and loves being part of the family. Every day she becomes a little more confident and relaxed in her new surroundings.

Poppy’s Vet Visit 🩺🐾

Poppy had her baseline checkup today — shots and microchip included!Black Labrador RetrieverShe was very hesitant to go into the clinic and decided to pancake right at the door, so the lovely vet tech scooped her up and carried her into the exam room. 💕

The vet confirmed that Poppy is about 5 to 6 months old based on her teeth.

She weighed in at 51 pounds — down a few pounds since arriving, thanks to her new nutritious meals (don’t tell her she was a little chubberly!).

It was a great visit all around — Poppy was her sweet, gentle self, and the vet said she’s an absolute doll who will make her new family very happy. 🥰

It’s fascinating to think about where these three young girls spent their first five or six months before being found.

They’re all in such lovely condition — thick, shiny coats, bright eyes, and wonderfully social, well-adjusted personalities.Black Labrador RetrieverIt’s clear they were well cared for by someone before their adventure in the fields!

Anyway

More Poppy adventures to come as she gets ready to move on to her future of love and fun adventures.

November 9, 2025

Sweet Poppy arrived yesterday, thanks to Deb, who bravely drove three squiggly puppies from a farm where they’d been cared for after being found wandering the fields. Thank you, Deb — not an easy task to manage alone!

Our first stop was Tractor Supply, where they were holding a drop-in vet clinic for rabies shots.

Since Poppy is not a fan of leash walking just yet, we lifted her into a shopping cart — and as Deb said, “Well, why walk when you can be pushed like the queen you are?” 👑Black Labrador RetrieverShe weighed in at a super cuddly 53 pounds, did great for her shot, and proudly rode the cart back to the van.

In the car, Poppy was calm and quiet, lying on her rug and enjoying a few mini cookies.

Once home, she was a little hesitant to come inside, but our Ellie came to help and Poppy quickly relaxed and began to explore.Black Labrador RetrieverSince it was already dark, the backyard seemed a bit intimidating. We put a glow collar on her (because, let’s face it, black pups vanish in the dark!) and gently coaxed her off the deck — and around 11 p.m., success: she peed! 🎉

Poppy spent the evening cuddled up with Mark on the couch, happily chewing one of Frank’s favorite hedgehogs — much to his dismay.

She’s easygoing with our dogs, usually watching to see what they’re doing or quietly chewing a nylabone. Sometimes she curls up under the kitchen table by Chris’s feet while he watches his iPad — she’s already fitting right in.

Poppy slept through the night in a crate in our room. It took her a little while to settle, but once I lay on the floor and held her paw, she sighed and drifted off.

Black Labrador RetrieverThis morning she went outside, took care of business, and came in ready for breakfast. She’s fed behind a gate for now so she can focus on her own bowl — just a bit of puppy curiosity left from sharing with her sisters.

After a few rounds of retrieving the tennis ball, Poppy is now having a shower with Mark where it wouldn’t be surprising is she’s 5 pounds lighter from the mud comiing off!

Hopefully it will be  time for the morning nap!

Poppy is truly a dream foster — gentle, loving, and eager to please, but with her own timetable for trying new things. And that’s perfectly fine with us.

She’s sweet, soft, and simply adorable. 🖤🐾
