Skipper #2 Catahoula/Labrador Mix Male ~1 Year Old ID#3580
Skipper is an approximately 1 year old Catahoula/Labrador mix who was in a high kill shelter in NC after he was found stray. Skipper was a shelter favorite who is friendly, affectionate and playful. Skipper is petite, weighing in at only 40lbs. Please read Skipper’s blog from the bottom up to learn more about him while in foster care.

Skipper has been with us for two weeks. He is making progress with getting more comfortable living indoors. Skipper is very energetic and doesn’t sleep during the day. He plays all day until bedtime. Luckily, he loves toys and to play with River.
I’ve taken skipper on walks everyday. He’s scared of noises, people and other dogs. We will continue taking walks to help him get accustomed to the outside world. Skipper has learned to do his business outside and to sit. When Skipper came to us he didn’t enjoy being pet. Today, he is actually sitting on the couch with me enjoying attention.

Though Skipper is officially named Skipper at Brookline, we have now nicknamed him Finn at our house as it rolls easier off the tongue for training. This handsome guy has been with us for three days and boy is he active and all puppy.
He likes to chew on shoes.
He chases the mop.
He thinks your hand is a toy. He loves to play fetch and play with toys.
He doesn’t want to sleep unless you put him in his crate. We have some training to do with Finn, but I think he will pick things up quickly.
I took Finn for his first walk. I had trouble getting him out the front door. He gets scared of new noises and situations. I ended up taking him out back and through the fence to get him to the sidewalk. He crouched with his tale under him and sat. He waited until the big scary lawn mower up the street stopped. He then walked nicely for about a mile. When we returned, he finally took a nap on the floor. I found the solution to tiring him out after playing with him for a few hours.

Skipper did very well in his crate. No accidents or complaints, once we got him in.
I took him outside to do his business and got ready to introduce him to Buddy (a foster fail from Brookline). He did well with Buddy. He’s submissive to other dogs and just wants to play. Skipper is all about play time. The two of them played for a very long time. He wore Buddy out but he was still ready to go.
We played fetch for a while and ran around the yard. Skipper is pure stray and puppy. I don’t think he even knows his name or he could be ignoring me. He seems intelligent. He learned to go outside to do his business in one day. It’s more about me learning the signals from him.
Skipper is non stop playing. Here is a rare occurrence of him laying down.
It’s only been his second day so he may calm down. He had a little of build up energy from being in a kennel for over a month.

After a long wait, Skipper finally had his rescue ride North.
Skipper’s rescue ride went well. Skipper was said to be really scared on the front end of his trip but settled after awhile.
When Skipper arrived he was abundant of joy. When they said he was energetic, they weren’t kidding.
I put him in the crate to calm down for about an hour then took him outside. He ran for two hours. He seemed so be happy to be able to let loose. He was even crying as he ran out of excitement. He didn’t settle on his own. He went back in the crate, which he wasn’t happy about, around 8pm and didn’t hear a peep.

Skipper was chosen to attend an SPCA fundraising event while he was still at the shelter in NC and did amazing. Being in a new environment was initially scary for him, but after a few minutes he settled right in and was greeting anyone who walked past with a wagging tail!

He is reported to walk well on a harness. Skipper does well with men, women and kids. He did interact with several younger kids (around 5-10 years old) at the SPCA event. He licked their hands and met them with a play bow. He has also interacted with a teen and really liked playing fetch and chase with him.
Skipper has done well with his dog meets at the shelter but is unknown with cats.
