Jasmine’s Journey: From Breeder Mom to Beloved Travel Buddy
December 10, 2023 — It was a gray, rainy day, and honestly, Gene and I weren’t entirely sure what we’d gotten ourselves into when we said yes to a 7-year-old former breeder mom named Jasmine.
Off we went to meet Jasmine, her foster mom Jen L., and our adoption coordinator Jennifer F. at a park in Wilmington. The moment we saw her, it was love at first sight. She gave us gentle kisses and melted right into our hearts. She was understandably nervous and unsure, but so sweet and trusting. The car ride home, though, was another story—she panted nonstop for the full two hours.
Over the next few weeks, Jasmine taught us what patience and unconditional love really look like. We showed her stairs for the first time, introduced her to the strange magic of television, and took her on daily car rides (with plenty of treat “bribes”) to show her that the car can actually be fun. Even the doorbell was new—she didn’t bark at all at first! She’s since become quite the alert little watchdog, proudly announcing every visitor.
And because old habits die hard, this former mama still carries her “lovies” everywhere. Each one has a name, and our smart girl will go fetch whichever one we ask for. Every. Single. Time.
Fast-forward to today—our girl is a total pro traveler! She’s been everywhere from New York to Virginia (yes, she even rides the ferry) and will soon be heading to Colorado with us this November to visit our daughter. Hard to believe Jasmine will be \nine at the end of the month. She’s still quick on her paws, full of life, and continues to steal hearts wherever she goes. The Cape May–Lewes Ferry crew even knows her by name!
We’re endlessly grateful to Brookline for taking in “all the dogs” who need that second chance. Life just wouldn’t be the same without our Jazzie. And as for Gene—the man who once claimed he “didn’t want a dog”? Let’s just say he’s now her biggest fan (and chief spoiler-in-chief).
A huge thank-you to Jennifer F. and Jen L. for making this match happen. Because of you, our hearts—and our home—are full.
