Layton Yellow Labrador Retriever Mix Female 6 Months Old ID #3919

Layton weighs 41 lbs.

Layton is the littermate of Lisa, Lacey, and Laura Leigh, all of whom made their way up from foster care in Arkansas. She is a 6-month-old petite lab mix who is on the shy and submissive side with people and in new situations but is very sweet and extremely bright. She was a favorite of the transport team and arrived on October 31 with her tail thumping, looking forward to her new life!

After 24 hours in her new foster home, Layton seems to have settled in. Thankfully, the weather has been lovely, so she can enjoy the weather while it lasts. After her rescue ride, we stopped for a bath on the way home. Although fearful at first, once she felt the warm water, she leaned into her bath. She slept most of the way and was a great passenger.

Meeting the resident dogs went well. After a few sniffs and yips, all was good. Layton loved exploring the yard and sniffing all the new smells. Surprisingly, she came when she was called. Of course, there was food involved, so maybe that was the trick. Layton has a hearty appetite and does eat fast, so the slow bowl came out for her. After she ate, we took a walk around the block to get her used to a leash. She needs some work on that, but she’ll get the hang of it soon.Layton Yellow Labrador Retriever Mix Female 6 Months Old ID #3919

Layton isn’t a fan of noise. Halloween is probably not her favorite holiday, with the doorbell ringing and the resident dogs barking in chorus each time it sounds. Layton found her crate when she was overwhelmed, and so it stayed open for her as she needed it. Otherwise, she took refuge in the powder room. She did warm up, though, and found her way onto the couch as well as each dog bed.

Once she claimed her space, no one else could have it. Her favorite hangout was the top of the loveseat, where she perched to watch TV and the resident dogs. Perhaps she is part cat.Layton Yellow Labrador Retriever Mix Female 6 Months Old ID #3919

Because she didn’t want to do the stairs, we all slept downstairs. FM was tired from the early morning pickup, and Layton had a big day too. She slept all the way to 5:30AM (which was really 6:30AM) and never made a peep. After going outside, it was time for breakfast and a start to the new day.

And a full day it was! Layton learned a lot of new things and taught us a bit about herself. She is a very bright little lady. Layton is pretty good about potty—she whined at the door or even rang the bell to be let out. Layton doesn’t mind her crate; in fact, she enters it easily. However, she jumps on FM to get attention—which is the first thing to work on. She is also not shy about checking out what’s on the counter, which is the second thing we will work on. Layton does overcome her fears—when she realized that everyone else was upstairs, she figured out her way up and then down all on her own. She also found all the toys and helped herself to everything that tickled her fancy. One of the toys was used to play keep-away, which was rather comical. Layton chases Dol.

It was a very full day. Stay tuned to learn more about this Southern Belle!
