Meet Penny! This beautiful 7 month old Labrador mix found herself at the Quakertown SPCA. This loud and chaotic environment was just too much for her so she was shut down and frightened. Luckily, Penny is now decompressing in a Brookline foster home. Please read her blog from the bottom up to learn more about her.

Penny has had a great week. She’s been enjoying lots of walks and special visits from her best friend, our granddaughter Mabel. She loves to hang out with our dogs and relax. She’s also started to play with Frank, which is always a great sign. Once Frank decides another dog is fun to have around, you know they’re settling in well.

We also took a trip to the pet store, which went really well. Penny is great in the van just lays down behind the driver seat and naps. Penny was a little cautious at first in the store, but she handled it beautifully. Even a loud, barking husky at the checkout only made her pause and stare, as if trying to figure out what his problem was.

Penny is fully house-trained and hasn’t had a single accident in the house.

She is also getting more comfortable with her nighttime routine, going into her crate and settling down to sleep. She may wake briefly during the night, but with a little reassurance, she quickly drifts back off.

I’m sure Penny would prefer to sleep with us, but having her crate-trained will be a real advantage for her future family. They’ll be able to decide what works best for them once she’s adopted.

She absolutely loves her walks and is always the first one waiting in the mudroom for the last walk of the day—pushing her head into the harness to get things moving a little faster.Penny is also becoming much braver when meeting new people. She may hang back at first and give a little bark, but once she sees us chatting and realizes everything is okay, she’s all in for saying hello. Yesterday, we had a visitor come into the house, and as soon as she sat down, Penny hopped right up onto her lap to snuggle and give kisses. There’s nothing Penny enjoys more than curling up on your lap—especially when you’re trying to write her blog!

Penny – Day 2 🐾💕

Penny had a great second day yesterday!

Last night, we moved her crate into our bedroom. Once she settled in and we covered it with a sheet, she slept quietly through the night. We didn’t hear a peep from her until I got her up at 6:00 a.m. this morning.

Penny hasn’t had a single accident in the house. She’s already letting us know when she needs to go outside by standing at the door, she’s doing an excellent job with her house training.

In the morning she went for a walk around the neighborhood. She likes to stop and watch people as they go by, almost as if she recognizes them or is waiting for them to say hello before happily moving on.

She snoozed through most of the World Cup soccer, only lifting her head whenever a loud cheer went up. Our daughter, her husband, and Mabel came over to meet Penny.

At first, Penny was a little reserved and let out a few little barks, but it didn’t take long for her to realize everyone was friendly.

Soon she was having a wonderful time chasing Mabel around and soaking up all the hugs and kisses from them.

After a busy day for Penny, and after everyone left, she curled up with Ellie for a well-earned nap. Penny is a lovely, gentle, and incredibly sweet girl who deserves a home filled with love and kindness. She will thrive in a family where she can relax, feel safe, and truly be herself.

Penny’s Day 1 Update 🐾❤️

Little Penny has already begun to settle in nicely. Getting to know the backyard this morning after last night’s storm

She had a fairly good night once Mark worked out at 2 a.m. that Penny is a bit of a “budgerigar” and only settles in her crate if you throw a blanket over it. We’ll see if that works again tonight!At the shelter, it was thought that Penny needed to be around another dog to feel comfortable, but here she seems much more people-focused. She follows us around the house, and if we stop to cook or sit down, she happily lays at our feet—often right on top of them! If we’re on the couch, she jumps up for a snuggle.She does not seem too bothered about where our two dogs are, but maybe she knows they are in the house and that makes her feel secure. Her first walk last night went really well. She weaved around a little and stopped frequently for a good sniff, but overall it was a great start.Penny is eating well. She does occasionally stop to see what our dogs are doing, and as we do with all our foster dogs, we’re feeding her behind a gate away from our own dogs until we get to know her eating habits and how comfortable she is around food.I gave her a bath this morning, which she was absolutely fine with. As usual, she christened our shower room with a “hair storm” the moment she stepped out of the shower! It must be a foster dog thing, because our own dogs know the command, “Shake, shake, shake!” while they’re still in the shower to save the rest of the room from getting soaked. We’re looking forward to seeing how Penny gets on today as she continues to decompress. We’re already seeing her cheeky, playful side starting to emerge, and she’s proving to be a very sweet little peanut.

July 18, 2026

This morning, Mark, Chris, our resident dog Ellie, and I took a trip to the Quakertown SPCA to pick up Miss Penny. Initially, the shelter staff were quite cautious about bringing Penny out. Her kennel was covered with a large pink sheet, and with other dogs barking deeply around her, she remained completely silent, tucked away at the back.

But the moment she spotted Ellie, everything changed. Penny came bounding out with excitement—kissing Ellie and quickly extending that same affection to all the humans nearby.

After a brief introduction, we walked both girls to the van. Ellie jumped in first, and Penny followed right behind without hesitation. The ride home was smooth and easy, with Penny settling at my feet, occasionally nudging for a few strokes or kisses.

Once home, she ran in alongside Ellie, met Frank, and has since been happily exploring and relaxing with the rest of the gang. Penny has a beautiful long chocolate coat and a petite frame, though at just seven months old, she still has some growing to do.It’s also worth noting that “Penny” is a new name given at the shelter, so she’s still learning it.

A gentle, sweet start for a very special girl.
