Meet S’mores.  S’mores was surrendered by her breeder as they were no longer using her to breed. S’mores is very friendly and affectionate and will be learning how to live in a home in her Brookline foster home. Please read her blog from the bottom up to learn more about her.

As I usually say, S’mores is doing well at BCK. She and I have been going on adventures together. We have gone on numerous walks in the woods, in housing developments and in Industrial parks. She is great on lead. She likes to carry her stuffy pretty consistently.

She is a delight to walk. She makes these adorable sounds like a little happy cry. She is adorable and I am smitten. There were dogs in the neighborhood that were barking and she did not care. She also wants to say hello to everyone person she sees. We met a man yesterday that stopped to say hello to her and commented what a nice dog she is. I agreed.

She is also really good in the car. She likes to sit in the front seat. I stroke her incredibly soft fur.  She reminds me of a baby hippo just a little. I call her smore-a-potamus. She is such a cutie pie.

S’mores does get anxious. It usually is due to something that upset her earlier. For example, she had an accident in her run. She was really upset and anxious. If she hears me, she gets worked up if I don’t come to see her right away. When she gets worked up, it takes some time for her to calm down. I find the best thing to do is go for a walk and burn off some of those scary emotions. It helps her. We have also started her fluoxetine (Prozac). It will take a few weeks for any changes to occur.Tomorrow S’mores goes in to be spayed. By the time her stitches are out the meds should be helping her.

I think it’s best that S’mores is an only dog. She isn’t reactive to dogs but when she gets anxious, she gets dog selective. Also only older kids. She would do well in a quiet household where her family is around her more.

S’mores continues to do well at BCK. She and I have gone on a few walk. She really walks nicely on lead. She also loves to carry a toy.

S’mores can be mouthy especially when she is anxious. She will pant and pace. The best thing to do is to offer her a toy. This happened at my house and one of our volunteers made a calming collar. It was amazing night and day. She was totally relaxed.

This is prior to the collar.With the collar.I brought S’mores to my house Sunday. She was very anxious. I used the calming collar but it didn’t seem to help. She began to growl at Macey our 11 yr old lab. She was very worked up. She was barking and growling loudly. Spittle was flying.  We removed Macey and then I brought S’mores back to BCK. She was fine after.

S’mores has met my dog multiple times now. She was fine with Phoebe and Betty. Once she growled at Betty but I think it was because Betty was watching her. I think it is best for S’mores to be an only dog at least for now. I think she led a quiet life on the farm and leaving has disrupted her quiet life. Maybe all these meetings are too much. She needs one person to love.

I saw her today. We went for a walk. She was happy and affectionate when we were together. I think she likes BCK because it feels familiar like the farm. She is in a run. People take her out for potty breaks. She is beginning to engage with people more. Once she knows you she gets attached.

S’mores is getting spayed on the 27th. I will keep working with her but I think it is best we don’t do any more field trips to my house. Enjoy all the pictures from our excursions. S’mores is so adorable.

S’mores is doing well at BCK. We have done a number of walks. She walks very nicely on lead. She pulls a little. We all notice she is less mouthy. She is beginning to settle into her new environment.

I think I understand S’mores grabbiness. All this attention and people are new for her. She probably didn’t get much attention on the farm and now all these people are around her. She needs an emotional support toy to help her with those big feelings. If a toy isn’t available she grabs a rock or you. I correct her with no if she grabs me and I always have a toy to give her.S’mores has been on 2 excursions to my house to get her used to being back in a home. Also, I want to see what she’s like with other dogs.

Our first trip was about 30 minutes. She is very good in the car. She was nervous but did okay. She did growl at Betty who was lying on the couch staring at her. Betty was too lazy to meet her outside.

The second time S’mores was much more relaxed. She was great with Betty.

She and Phoebe drank water from the giant water bowl at the same time. No issues.

S’mores was walking in front of Macey. Macey grabbed her by the scruff. Luckily, S’mores did not react. I told Macey no and she stopped immediately. Not perfect but better. We hung out for about 2 hrs. S’mores was able to relax in the house. We will do it a few more times.We have not worked on sit or down. I need to do that with her. I think she is doing great. We will keep introducing her to my girls. She is very comfy at BCK. She has a cot she sleeps on. I come by and she is sacked out across the bed. All the staff love her. She gets plenty of attention. She likes everyone.

S’mores recently got moved to Kamp. Shortly after arriving at her foster home, S’mores was feeling a little too overwhelmed with the activity level in the home. I have been spending time with her everyday. She is acclimating well. She was is the quiet room until yesterday. Now, she is in the main part. We have been taking her out and getting to know her. More importantly, she is getting to know us. She is very sweet. She looks like a puppy but as we know, she is not.

She can be mouthy. She needs to hold a toy otherwise she wants to grab your hand. We are trying to break her of the grabbing by telling her no then telling her she is a good girl when she stops. She is catching on.

She is happy for attention but has a tendency in the big yard to go off exploring. I am working on her recalls but I am not as exciting as the yard yet. We will get there. She is very sweet. She holds her toy and wiggles and makes these grunt/cry sounds. She is happy to show her toy. She does have her emotional support carrot in her run.We have a spay appointment for the 27th of August. All her bloodwork came back and she is in great shape. She is a very healthy little girl. I look forward to spending time with S’mores and becoming her friend.

Today is S’mores 7th birthday!!!  She was rescued off the farm last week after a long car ride (and the efforts of Valerie and Mike).

She is the most beautiful charcoal lab with expressive and adoring eyes. She rode nicely in the car and has gradually been decompressing and adapting to life off the farm. She met the 2 resident dogs with lots of tail wags. She loves every human and craves attention and affection.

She has raided the toy box and carries balls, bones, and stuffies around the house ( we joke they are her emotional support stuffies!)

She sleeps downstairs peacefully at night and has the run of the house. She has only had 2 small accidents so far and is housetraining very nicely with 2 other dogs to set the example.  She eats quickly and with gusto. We call her “The Shark” when she takes treats which will hopefully improve with training. S’mores is learning to walk on a leash and remains hesitant but she does not pull when walking.

She lived on the farm with 2 children and seems to like meeting the children in the neighborhood. She enjoys being brushed and loves being spoken to and any form of affection.

S’mores has acclimated much faster than many other farm dogs. She was fearful of the television but only her first night home. She walks up/down 6-8 steps with no problem but hasn’t ventures upstairs in our home.
