Lanie Black Labrador Retriever Female 9 Years Old ID #3590

Black Labrador RetrieverMeet Lanie!  Lanie is a sweet 9.5 year old pure bred black Labrador who weighs in at 107lbs.  Lanie’s owner was recently hospitalized so Lanie and her fur brother Harvey were living alone in the house.  Luckily, the owner’s grand-daughter was able to check in on them once a day, and the owner’s son decided to reach out to Brookline for help.  Lanie was in need of some medical care for an infected paw and ears, and to bring her UTD on her vaccinations.  Lanie is now safe in a Brookline foster home.  Please read her blog from the bottom up to learn more about her time in foster care.

Lanie has been enjoying the dog days of summer by just relaxing in the air conditioning most days helping her foster mom work and taking frequent naps.

Lanie recently had surgery to remove a level 1 sarcoma but the surgery was very successful and the tumor was completely removed.  She knows when her foster dad gets home from work now and anxiously waits at the door or looks at the window.

One day she was able to follow him to work and helped at the office.

Lanie had a busy couple of weeks! One day, her foster parents were away for most of the day, so Lanie asked her friend Lisa to stay with her. Lisa brought her a stuffed piggy, which Lanie loved and was eager to show her foster parents when they got home.

That evening, Lanie went to a food truck festival where she relaxed, enjoyed the music, smelled the smells, and gazed longingly at some macaroni and cheese.

Lanie cares deeply about all her stuffed animals and tried to see if Reindeer would get breakfast if she left him by her bowl (it didn’t work).

For her foster dad’s birthday, Lanie tried her hand at being a lap dog. It went ok. Then that evening, she enjoyed an evening at the Shipyard by the river, where she met some friends and may have even gotten a pizza crust.

Lanie has had a busy past two weeks.  Memorial Day weekend, she went with her foster parents to a Memorial Day party and was very excited to meet all her new friends.  She wore her new red bandana that was part of her foster welcome package, and she loved showing it off.  Lanie was excited to help play some games during the party and help out with the grill.

This weekend, she went with her foster parents to Parks on Tap at Lemon Hill in Philadelphia.  She was such a good girl and just relaxed in the grass and got to watch a beautiful sunset.Black Labrador Retriever

During the week, Lanie helps her foster mom work, but sometimes work is too much and she needs to take naps to recover.  Sometimes Lanie thinks laying in bed is time to play and will roll on her back and kick and will wrestle with her squeaky toys.

Lanie continues on her weight loss journey and is now down to 94 pounds from her original 107 pounds.  The staff at the vet love her and make a big deal when she goes on the scale. Black Labrador Retriever

Lanie has fully settled into her foster home and has become very playful despite her age.  She loves to grab stuffed animals to greet you with at the door, and her favorite thing is rolling around in the grass while you try and grab her feet!

She also has become quite the supervisor when her foster dad is doing yardwork or gardening.  She especially likes it when he brings the hose out to water, and Lanie likes to attack the water coming out of the hose.

Lanie also met a new kitten foster, and she was very gentle with him; she gave him a quick sniff and then ignored the kitten.Black Labrador Retriever

Lanie also had a recheck appointment for her ears, which are still bothering her.  She was such a good girl at the vet and even got some treats.  Lanie is on different medication for her ears, which we hope will be more effective.Black Labrador Retriever

Lanie continues to go on daily walks and is on a diet, and has lost over 10 pounds!  She seems to feel much better moving around without so much weight.  Lanie, surprisingly, isn’t a big beggar; she loves her food, but she understands that when her foster parents are eating, it is not her time to eat.

Lanie continues to get more comfortable in her foster home and loves going on walks and playing with her toys.  On Wednesday she went to the office with her foster dad and got lots of attention.  She was such a good girl and was very quiet, except when she was snoring under her foster dad’s desk.Black Labrador Retriever Mix

When she got home after a long day of work, there was an amazing new foster care package waiting for Lanie.

She loves all the toys that were in the box and says thank you to all the volunteers who prepared it!Black Labrador Retriever Mix

Lanie’s personality is really starting to shine through now that she is feeling more comfortable.  Despite her age, her foster parents have learned she loves to play with toys and run (for very short periods) in the grass.  She loves bringing her foster parents toys when they walk in the door!  Lanie went for a trip to PetSmart on Saturday to pick up some new toys and get a harness, as she has slipped out of her collar while walking a few times.Black Labrador Retriever Mix She loves car rides also, and getting those jowls flapping in the wind!

Lanie had her ears rechecked last Monday to see how her ear infection was doing.  Unfortunately, there was a lot of yeast still in her ears, so the vet prescribed new ear drops and some oral medication.  Lanie has lost about 5 pounds in the past 2 weeks, which is a great start to getting her to a healthier weight.  All the staff at the veterinarian loved her, she is always so sweet to strangers

Lanie had a busy weekend with her foster family!  Friday evening, she went to a brewery with her foster parents.  There were some other dogs there she was interested in sniffing, but the BBQ truck was even better for sniffing!  Lanie begged with her eyes as her foster parents ate, and was quick to catch anything that fell on the floor.

On Saturday, Lanie helped do some yard work, but it was very warm.  Her foster parents got out the kiddie pool to see if she would like it.  She was unsure at first and just thought it might be a giant water bowl, but once she got her feet wet, she realized how refreshing it felt.Black Labrador Retriever

On Easter Sunday, Lanie went for a car ride to see her foster parents’ family.  Lanie met the resident dog named Princess there during the visit.  They sniffed and barked a little, but did very well walking together.

Lanie was very tired from her busy weekend, and as soon as she got home, she got on the bed to rest up.Black Labrador Retriever

Lanie had a fun weekend with her new foster family.  On Saturday, the weather wasn’t too nice, so we went to a local brewery where she was a very good girl and got a lot of attention.

After the brewery and a ride in the car, it was nap time on the sofa. Black Labrador Retriever On Sunday, Lanie helped her foster dad in the yard doing some yard work.  She was a very good supervisor!Black Labrador Retriever She was enjoying the sun and decided to roll around in the grass.

Lanie loves going on walks and is still getting comfortable with her foster kitty siblings (they can be scary sometimes and move quickly!) She was sleeping overnight on the couch but has become more attached to her foster parents and now needs to sleep in the same room with them.  She is conquering going up and down the steps a lot better also

Black Labrador Retriever

Lanie is settling in great in her foster home. The first night, she discovered the couch right away and slept all night, snoring loudly.Black Labrador Retriever

On Monday, she helped her foster mom work all day at home in the office while taking many naps.

Lanie does not like to be left alone and wanted to follow her foster mom everywhere, even during bathroom breaks. After work, she got a nice bath, which she did not seem to mind as long as she was getting treats.

After work on Tuesday, Lanie went for a nice walk around the neighborhood, which will gradually be increased in distance to help her in her weight loss journey. Lanie can be very playful and likes to hand squeaky toys to her foster parents to play with.

Lanie is still a little unsure of her kitty foster siblings and will bark at them if they stare at her too long. We are hoping they become friends soon.

Now that Lanie is getting more comfortable in her foster home, she will be focusing on losing weight, reinforcing potty training, and working on her separation anxiety.
